They were about 40 cms when we got them. They have grown since we got them as they were initially shorter than the glass doors to their cage however are now about 60/70 cms.

Keep the one that died and take it to a vet for an autopsy. It my cost a little but could be worth the coin.

yes we will do that. I have kept the dead one to show to the breeder tomorrow also. He may beable to shed some light. Do I need to find a reptile vet in Townsville to do the autopsy? I'll phone around.

I think that is a bit of a problem... you should have at least a good digital thermometer and ideally also a thermostat to regulate and monitor temps. I have no idea whether that is related to your problem and the sad loss of your baby, but I would definitely get on to herpshop and order one of each!

Sorry I only have the medical thermometre that I use on the kids. I was unable to take a reading from the cooler side of the cage as the electronic thermometre would not read 'mid air' although it feels similar to the room temperature of our loungeroom. The warmer temp of 36.8 was by placing the thermometre flat against the heat mat. The heat mat box states 40 watts. Ne temps are written on the box.

Thanks for everyones suggestions. I'm off to bed - I now have to think of a good way to break it to the family in the morning. I will follow up on the correct thermometre and thermastat.

Impossible to say why the smaller one died without an autopsy to be honest. A couple of points though, the 2 snakes should have been kept seperately and really should be from day one or at least after their first shed. It is perfectly possible that the larger one killed the smaller one but I'm not suggesting that happened but it is a possibility. Hatchlings of any species shouldn't be kept together.
They should also be eating MUCH more than 1 pink rat every 2 weeks.

Sorry for your loss, all this talk about your snake dying made me paranoid as its getting a wee bit cold here over nigt so i went and checked on my yearling jungle just to make sure he is fine.

I was thinking the same as Boa - Maybe the larger one killed the smaller one?
