Humane killings

Hi guys,
Just wondering if someone can help me with the best way to kill rats i have looked into co2 gas but it only comes in big bottles (knee high) and that would last me years if it is available in smaller bottles could you please tell me where. I'm located in the central coast of Queensland.

I'm pretty sure you can get small bottles from, like, Kmart and places like that. I think it's for making your own soda etc.

Kmart does sell bottles of carbon dioxide, but you need a soda machine thing to use them.

If you haven't got many just whack their heads against a hard surface.

vinegar mixed with bicarb soda produces CO2, and is cheap and easy

As bad as it sounds, a good wack on the back of the head will do the job.
It is good for feeding stuborn snakes too, as they are still warm.

Generally Gas companies (industrial) that supply LPG & commercial gas . in vic companies like BOC gas and supergas I would imagine you would have similar companies up there.
The bottles generally come in a small size as well as the large and it cost about $45.00 plus $8.00 amonth rental. (small)

If you did get your hands on the gas how would you use it? Put the rats in a plastic bag and then fill it with the gas??

Run a hose from the gas bottle &regulator into a closed container suchas abucket or bin depending on how much you need to cull . Then run gas for about 5 seconds and thats it
Be careful to disperse the gas away from you when your finished or you might become a victom to.( this is just a rough guide only)

Try doing a search. I vagurely remember seeing a picture of a 2l coke bottle to mix the vinegar & bicarb, and the coke bottle lid had a hole with some plastic aquarium airhose connected to it. The other end of the airhose was then poked through the lid of a clear icecream-container sized container, which you put the rat into.
Tip the vinegar & bicarb into the coke bottle, quickly put the lid on and as the chemicals mix the co2 flows through the airhose and fills the rat container, and the rat dies.

There's probably a little more to it than that (chemical ratios and better methods of mixing the ingredients while capturing the gas, etc).

Do you're snakes usually have a good feeding responce after a whack on the head or you mean hitting the rats head? (joking)

imho I don't believe there is a way to "humanly kill" an animal but there are a few ways of culling eg: gassing,swimming and being knocked on the head
of the 3 mentioned I believe drowning would be the cheaper and somehow the better of the 3

finally apologies to the animal lovers abroad about this topic.

Use the bi-carb mix etc and run a hose into a plastic bag that contains the rats. The tie off, leave and hey presto dead rat.
