i have a crazy atherton, and need some serious advice please!! she was born in feb this year. so about 8 months old now.. i have posted bout her before, for those who don't know this is pat's daughter, couldn't register myself. wouldn't accept phone number. Grr.. so bree has been on pinkie rats for a couple of moths now. and i wanted to move her up to fuzzie's. tried about 6 fuzzie's on her, she never eat's them, i even got the small one's so she would think they ere pinkies.. nope. she whammed one from me a week ago, came home later thinking it's gone. no, still in enclosure, and she's watching it from her hide. mum make's some jokes bout her being a crazy snake, cause she seem's to eat the food a certain time. and just now, i gave into her and gave her two pinkie's. she took them without a second thought, just wondering maybe a different smell? that may sound silly, but she's soooo small for her age, so i want to move her up. the previous time she ate was one pinkie, on the 22nd sep. a week after i tried with the fuzzie's... i just don't know what's she doing!!!! please need some advice! |

dont stress ya probly not doing anything rong .....is it rats or mice you are trying to feed, and are they dead or alive, cos if they are alive she could just be scarred of tham (like my snake, she's a sook) and if its a rat try mice jungle can sometimes not like rats so just try a mouse (not a pinkie) and if she takes it just get a fizzy rat and rub the smell of the mouses furr onto the rat so she gets the smell (they are attracted to the smell of the furr not the blood).... goodluck

How often do you feed this snake? what temps is she being kept at? How do you feed her? Do you dangle a thawed rodent in her face till she hits it or leave it in enclosure?
I assume this snake is a bit aggressive and goes to bite you every chance it gets? If thats the case its probably stressed and feeling a bit insecure.Sounds like it may be a bit undersized and underconditioned as well if its a finnicky eater.
Personally I dont like leaving rodents in enclosures and like them to take the food when offered. If you dangle the rodent (or use forceps to hold it) and tease it a bit. Usually they will grab and coil the food. However finnicky feeders will sometimes drop the rodent if they see any movement or see you watching.
Once they take the rodent stay still until the rodent is eaten. If they drop it, get the rodent straight out and try again (and again) until they actually eat it. Usually they do in second or sometimes third attempt. If it wont take it take the rodent out and leave it for a few days and try again.
If you can't get it to accept the fuzzies leave it a few extra days without food. If its a bit hungrier it might be more eager to feed. I would only leave a rodent in the enclosure if you fail to get it feeding responce after you give this a go.

yes thats all good but young snakes need time to get used to eating in front of you, so for the first few times you might have to leave to room and leave the food with them for a hour

yes, i dangle it. she never snaps. is the sooky snake, only bitten once. i left her two weeks with no food, and today gave her two pinkies over two husr apart. she sits in the enclosure watching the food if i leave it. but she ate the two happily. just not fuzzie. the temp in the warm is just a bit over 30, and the cool is 22. she is always in the cool though as it's fairly warm here. i feed her by the tweezers. she takes the pinkie's no prob, but when you try the fuzzie's (same size roughly) she shy's away. soooo not an aggressive snake.
