Info please

I found this guy/gril this morning, was about to be roadkill so i bought it home, will be releasing it tonight when i get my car back. I have no idea about turtles so is there anything i should check for just to make sure its fit and healthy before letting it go??
Thanks in advance for any help.

As it is totally illegal to collect wild herps in Victoria, do you think it's wise to advertise the fact???

I am aware of that thanks,

Im not collecting it, it was in the middle of the road on the highway and was about to get run over so i thought i would try and do the right thing and move it to a safer place, (no dam insight to put it in) i had to get home in a hurry (sorry for the trucks being late) so the wife could go to work and i could get the kids off to school. I was just trying to make sure it was ok before releasing it.

they are beautiful animals if taken care of, best thing to do is put it back where you found it but a bit futher in and away from the road,

The problem is you don't know where it came from or where it was headed.
Turts will trek long distances to find bigger water ways if their own area becomes too small or over crowded. You may find several animals along that road due to their movements. You havn't helped a lost animal, you have actually upset an established colony. Personally I would have pulled it off the road & let it continue its path to wherever its destination lead.

But as you have already taken the animal away I would be inclined to rellocate it close to where it was found so it may get back to where it belongs. Relocating it to just any old pond isn't a good idea imo.

When I said collecting, I didn't mean keeping it. Even as a licenced Reptile Controller I can not legally touch a wild herp even to move it off the road.
Even though you didn't see a dam you should have left it alone (or at most left it in a relatively safe spot off the road). It was probably on the move for a reason that only it knows.
It's dam may have been polluted/over populated and it was finding a new home,
It may have been on it's way to a dam/water source that was there and you just didn't happen to see it. There are many reasons it could have been on the move.
Hey, great, I commend you for stopping it becoming roadkill , but I dare say it knew the area and where it was going.
All I ment with the earlier post was, it's illegal, you know it's illegal so why advertise the fact you've done it???

I never implied he was bragging. DSE will pop in from time to time on the site and I was just saying it probably isn't wise telling them you've caught a wild herp without a relevant permit.

I think minor infractions like that can be over looked if the person believes they are doing the best thing by the animal in question.

It is often not worth the hassel they tell you that you were bad and not to do it again. Not to say they couldn't if they chose to fine the hell out of you. But a minor infraction from a person who thought they were doing the right thing is often over looked as a stuff up and forgotten.
