Injured Bluey

Hi all,
My 11 year old daughter just brought home an injure adult bluey. She thought it might have been run over but at closer inspection it looks like some "A:-HOLE!! has speared it through its head and out the bottom of it's throat. The entry point is about a cm forward of the eyes and the exit is under the neck almost at the shoulder mark.
The poor thing can not open its eyes and it smells like it is rotting! A friend of my daughters said she had seen it lying on the path a day ago but she thought it was dead. So the poor little bugga has been suffering for awhile. Clear mucous/saliva is dribbling out the corner of it's mouth. With all this it still appears reactive when held reasonable lively, and it's limbs all work fine and hold on when picked up. I have placed it in a warm place and have applied iodine to both wounds. I have work tomorrow but can anyone suggest a number to call of someone in the South/West Sydney region who could provide better care? (Wildlife rescue or Retile rescue) etc.

Thanks, Davo

In my opinion from dealing with wildlife as a carer, it would probably be best to bipass wildcare at this time and take it straight to the vet, where it will most likely be put to sleep.
At least then if it can be fixed the vet should treat it and pass it on, but it doesnt need to be kept in pain for any longer than necessary.

Not sure if they cover the south west but try Syney Wildlife on 9413 4300. Peterrescue in this site was a carer for them and may be some help if you can contact him. Good luck.

Visit Facebook Profile
if it is still alive after the wound has healed like that i think there is a decent chance it will survive but still take it to a vet.

thats horrible...poor little bugger.Yeah I'd say a VET, cos it could be gettin infetcted even tho your puttin iodine on it.
But I reckon you should give it ya best shot and get him better if its possible. but in the best interest of the lizard it might be best to put him down.....
I did voluntary work at a VET for 3 years....and its so hard to have to make the decision to put an animal down

Speaking of humans...
Igot a call yesterday.
"My father has killed a snake and we have it in a jar of metho, what do we do with it??"
I asked why he killed it and was told the father just kills snakes when he sees them.I asked if they were in danger when the snake was killed,?The answer was "nah, a little snake like this was no danger."
It was a 20cm copperhead.
Yesterday was not a great day for me to start with and i proceeded to give this guy a torrent of abuse (i had some pent up rage to release anyway) and told him to expect a visit from the authorities.
So how did the bluey go?
The rotten smell does not necasserily mean its the end for it, still serious though.
