Hi everyone,
Ok so i've had Carnage since Wednesday, he seems to be goin really well, hes still in his click clack at the mo', but i am going to put him into his bigger enclosure after he eats. Just a few questions to get things cleared up a bit.
Temperature hot spot - 32c at the most
Branches - 27c
Cool end - gets up to 24/25 or should i have it lower at 20/22c?
Are these temps ok? just confused on cooler end, also been told by some that nights should be warmer but also been told leave the nights cooler and let the temps drop? Should i just keep these temps and at night let them drop naturally? The enclosure is kept warm with a red 40w party globe
Also i have just used riversand as substrate is this alright?
I got him on last Wednesday, Tim at URS said hes on basically an adult mouse every second Tuesday, so i'll be trying tonite to see if he'll eat a mouse, i'll offer it on tongs should i do it when hes starting to crawl around a bit or should i disturb him with it? Also he doesn't look big enough to eat a full grown mouse!! Most of the day he lies underneath the newspaper in the click clack and comes onto his branch about 5-6 o clock and has a slither around. I still haven't handled him yet, is it better to handle them before they eat or after? He has calmed down a lot he doesn't care if people look at him through the tub and i can move things around if hes 1/2 hidden by newspaper. I should have photos soon too. Sorry this is a bit scattered, thats just me.
Just wanted to double check everything
Thanks anyways
Jane

i dunno about temps but dont handle him after a feed and preferably dont change his container after a feed because it will just stress him out

Hi Jane
I personally wouldn't put him on river sand........it could stick to it's food and can swallow the sand. It may not do any harm but why take the risk!
In small containers I just use kitchen paper or newspaper in large containers. JMO!

Theres nothing wrong with the click clack, its just that i have this really cool display enclosure just sitting in my loungeroom waiting for him, and you can't realy get a good look at him in the click clack, i'm hangin out to be able to just sit back and watch him. My big plan was to feed him tonite in his click clack and then tomorrow nite transfer him to his big enclosure, then for the next few days while i'm at work he gets to explore and get used to his big new enclosure, i'm mainly home Sunday thru to Wednesday. The riversand is in his big enclosure, whats the difference between riversand and repti-sand that you buy at the petshop? I got newspaper in the click clack but didn't really want it in the enclosure, thought something more natural looking is worth going to the trouble of cleaning, what else thats natural looking makes a good substrate?

If he is small enough to be in a ClickClack he is probably too small to go in a big enclosure. Snakes, especially Jungles feel more secure in something small when they are juveniles.
The temperatures seem fine, don't worry so much about the night temps as they can drop pretty low as long as they get warm during the day.
Don't use sand, just paper towel or newspaper.
I, personally, would be feeding it at the very least once a week but that is a personal thing.

i was the same as you, had a really cool enclosure and couldnt wait to put em in it, ppl told me not to as it was too big for the snake at this time, but did i listen no, but i learnt from it, they are now back in click clacks as they stressed out in the enclosure and wouldnt eat, they are much happier now

I spose he could stay in the click clack for awhile its just soo boring!! Hes probably about 70cm long i think about 7/8 months. His click clack is a 52litre starmaid tub, it has a rock which lifts up at one end and a forked branch and newspaper. He mainly uses the newspaper to hide under, and goes on the branches at night. The other enclosure is about 1m tall, 90cm wide and 50cm deep. it has riversand at the mo' and a rock cave, a bottom off a potplant for a water dish and 3 forked branches so he can reach different spots and heights = different temps, and i got a 1/2 potplant that sits on the wall up next to the tallest branch. I am collecting fake plants to put in the big enclosure as well.
So if i keep him in the tub when will i be able to handle him?, hes been in there for exactly one week now, and tonite will hopefully be his first feed.
Thanks again

Hey Jane,
Repti-sand (correct me if I'm wrong anyone) is actually crushed walnut shells and is quite co**** in comparison to river sand. I personally wouldn't use either in your vivarium. When I first got my DP a few months back I had the desert (repti) sand as my substrate but after feeding Zeph the first time I noticed that some of it stuck to the pinky which worried me as it can cause problems like blocking the pits in their mouth. I ended up going out and buying some astro turf for his vivarium instead, which is much easier to clean and still looks natural. I did cheat and leave the desert sand underneath, so that when I wash the astro turf he still has a natural looking substrate, but I'll always replace the astro turf asap after it dries and he tends to spend most days up in his tree so he's not normally on the sand anyway.
I never had a click clack for Zeph so other than what people say about them being the best option I can't comment. I can understand you wanting to get your jungle into it's big home though, it's really hard to resist having your snake in an enclosure you can see in to, especially when they're new and you just want to sit and watch them all day.
Good luck with your Jungle!

More a question than advice - but can you just put the click-clack in the big enclosure, and if he wants to wander out he can?
I am not sure why ppl say it will freak out, as in the wild the planet is pretty big, so if they feel freaked I presume they just go into a little hole somewhere.
Why wouldn't it just do the same thing in your enclosure provided enought hides are available?
I have put astro turf for my floor also, with some sheets of the perfectly fitting local newspaper underneath, gonna just swap the turf out with the second identical piece I have, and change the newspaper as well when time comes for cleaning.

If you do put him in the big enclosure, he will probably just hide the whole time and you will never see him at all. Even more boring.

Yea cam i thought about doing that, putting the click clack in the big enclosure but then it leaves stupid little gaps where he probably could get stuck.
Tempest that fake turf seems like a good idea!! Think i'll have to have a look around see what i can come up with....
Mangles, my big enclosure is set up so that you can sorta see into the hides, theres a rock cave at the bottom it has 2 ways to get in, front entrance which faces the front of enclosure so ppl can see into the cave, but there is a spot in the cave he can climb out the back and on the roof of the cave and bask, and that is a bit of a hidey hol but you would still see bits of him. The other hide is up the top, you wouldn't be able to see a great deal in there but if he looked out or once hes bigger you'll see him no worries. I'll post up some pics tomorrow of big enclosure and Carnage in the click clack, so yas can get a rough idea.

Once you have him eating he should be ok in the larger enclosure 70cm isnt too small but don't expect him to cruise round all day. Make sure there are plenty of hides available. I have used pinebark as a substrate and it is fine just be careful when feeding and I wouldn't recomend it for a click clack.
