Jungle's about to go to the vet

I have a 5 year old jungle python that has just shed. I noticed about 2 days before shedding that the snake appeared to be slightly prolapsed (I mean a couple of millimeters) and thought it might be due to his pending shed. I sprayed him with water and it seemed to resolve itself. Anyway, he shed last night - a complete one piece shed. I checked him out thoroughly, as I always do when my snakes shed and noticed he has a slight swelling on one side of his vent. The scales seem slightly raised and his spur is sticking out slightly because of the swelling. I naturally called the vet as soon as I saw this and have him booked in in another 1/2 hour. Has anyone else seen this before? Thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Before anyone asks, husbandry is probably not an issue. I keep him at the correct temperatures, clean and F10 his enclosure regularly etc. He has not gone off his food (he wants to eat now) but has not had a bowel movement for about 2 weeks. He normally has one everytime he sheds.

Thanks in advance.

Not one response Just got back and my poor jungle has an abscess near his cloaca which was drained and checked under a microscope. He's on a course of ceftazidime for a while. Hopefully the outcome will be good. He's still alert and active. The abscess does not seem to be affecting him (other than the swelling).

I was very pleased with his behaviour also. I've never had to manhandle him before and he didn't once try to bite, even while he was being prodded with a needle.

I'll keep him medicated, warm and clean

Thanks Akira.. I believe that when in doubt, always consult an expert. Had to give him an intra-muscular injection when I got home (that was fun). Hopefully things will work out well. I think I got it very early so things are looking good so far.

Poor bugger, did the vet have any ideas what may have caused it?

No idea. She said the skin was possibly compromised somehow. No obvious sign of injury and there is nothing in his enclosure that he could hurt himself on. It's possible he may have got a splinter from his perch though I've sanded that very smooth. I'll run my hand up and down it now to make sure. I have to take him back next week for a follow up. Hopefully things will be fine by then...

I've got the syringe in my hand right now about to give the old boy an intra muscular injection. This is going to be fun, I'm by myself and he's going to be wiggling around like crazy I might have a few blood pictures in a little while... Ah the joys of owning snakes

No blood but a bit of hissing. Looks like the abscess is going down a bit. Got another veterinary check on Friday. I hope things work out well.

Joys of herping! Its always interesting doing home treatment, usually their surprisingly very tolerant.

Did the vet say this will fix it?
