Juvenile Stimson Cage Size?

As you guys know from my introduction...... i'm pretty new here. I've had snakes in another country before but it's a whole new kettle of fish here.

I've just gotten my herp license and am ready to start afresh.

So..........

I will ask one question. Seeing as Stimsons like to climb..... how tall a cage should you have even if you plan to purchase a juvenile that will obviously grow into the cage? I was thinking along the lines of 1m wide by 80cm deep and 160cm tall at least.

Should I get a smaller "home" and place it in a larger cage etc etc.

Are custom made aquariums useful for this or is it better just to purchase a Vivarium like the URS Vivarium?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Juvenile Stimson Cage Size?

Hello Pat. Nice to meet you. I am relatively new, too. Still setting up my enclosure for my very first pet snake.

I have my heart set on a Stimson's or something that appreciates similar conditions. With the help of this wonderful group of ppl, I have purchased a 2foot x 1foot x 2foot tall enclosure which they say is perfect for a Stimmy. Later I will give him a bigger enclosure but for now, I've been advised that a baby would feel safer in something smaller.

RE: Juvenile Stimson Cage Size?

Hi Oof and welcome to the site. The cage dimensions you mention are way too big in my opinion. I keep my hatchling Stimmies in tubs that are approx. 30cm x 30cmx 20cm. My adult pair are housed in a cage approximately 80cm x 60cm x 60cm. Stimmies are not arboreal but they will climb branches etc if placed in the cage. However, they don't like to be too high off the ground. If you have a cage that is 60cm high, and have a branch running from one corner at the bottom of the cage, to another corner at the top of the cage, it will be used. You definately don't need a cage that is higher than it is wide, it is just a waste of space.

Yeah 160cm is far too tall even for an adult, half of that is plenty

Yes, what Mr Bredli said, with bells on. There seem to be a few sentimental types around here that would disagree, but they are wrong... Better to err on the small side than otherwise, and you will have fewer problems.

RE: Juvenile Stimson Cage Size?

I agree- our Stimson has a branch that runs from one side to the other- she spends a lot of time sitting on it in the high end.

Our enclosure is approximately 2 foot by one and a half foot high I think. Don't quote me- I've never actually measured it!

And our girl has grown since we got her- she's now about 63cm long.

RE: Juvenile Stimson Cage Size?

Well then it sounds to me like that'll be the size I go for.

Can this be done in an aquarium setup if I can get it custom made? Or is a proper vivarium more suitable?

That's all well and good Jason, but I am not the most handy guy around.

Besides, I wanted to get something that is more of a talking point in my home. Something where people walk in and say "wow!" And with my so-called skills in making things.......

Oof...check the quokka. Theres a guy in there who makes vivariums. Don't know if he can help- but its worth a try.

Or you could call Ken at Reptile Trader and ask about the new Reptapet enclosures- they're nice- and he's the only one I know of who stocks them.

Thank you very much AntaresiaLady! I didn't even know the Reptile Trader existed.
