How do you tell if a snake hatchie or even older snake has mites?
If you determine it has mites, how do you treat them? Are they deadly?
Thanks

They are not generally fatal within themselves are thought to be the primary vector in diseases like OPMV and IBD.
Mites can usually be seen with the naked eye. They tend to congregate around the eye, vent etc.
Other signs are the reptile soaking in a their water bowl for long periods followed by "pepper like" specs floating in the water.
Top of Decent spray is IMHO the most effective way of dealing with a mite problem.

untreated mites on a hatchy can be fatal.
you will see white specks on the skin, around the eyes, and the snake may soak in the waterbowl, seem listless, off food and the waterbowl will have dead mites on the bottom appearing like pepper as said before
to treat
take your waterbowl out and give the cage a 3 second burst of top of descent aircraft insecticide with your snake/s in there. let it sneak into all the nooks and crannies for 20 mins then take snake out and discard the substrate and clean and disinfect logs and clean the waterbowl . give the inside of the cage a good scrub especially the roof. refit your cage and put snake back . repeat the spray treatment in 5 days in case you missed some eggs.
a good spray in your herp room each month is a proactive approach to insect control. you will be surprised how it knocks the cockies too
