Monitors Soaking

One of my little spencers has been soaking in it's water bowl for two days.I have had a look for mites and no.Is this normal?do they just like a bath or could it be stress.

Hi Dodgie....Spencers; as with most arid monitor species like it hot;
have you provided a real hot basking spot within your enclosure...eg large flat rock etc ?

Seeing as it is soaking in water, perhaps it is too hot? I wouldn't say it being cold is a problem, because then it would be under its light.

He has a 70+ basking spot and his stack temp is 40-45c.On top of the stack i have a bit of flat concreate. With my other spencer it will not eat if the stack temp drops below 38c.I was wondering why it spends time in the water bowl?

It is a very shy animal that does not do much.It is under size and realy needs a good feed.I thought if it is in the water for to long that may be bad for it's health.

By saying 2 days do you mean it has been there for the whole time?

I know that i just like to see my new animals feed.
I may be paranoid but?.If they eat that tells me all is ok and if they don't well?.

That's true PhilK....my first thought being that often the water temp's; even though cool are some what more stable then the air temps; which may have explained the continued soaking....
This however does not seem to be the case; as dodgie has expressed.
As Inkslinger said monitors will often utilise a water bowl whilst shedding...two days is nothing to be to concerned with.
I'm assuming you have them housed within the same enclosure Dodgie?
If this is the case; keep an eye out the other is not being over dominate (bully) towards it's cage mate...in regards to food etc.....
If temps are fine; feeding behaviour is normal; and suitable hides are provided; i don't think there's to much to worry about at this stage....

I have them in separate enclosures, this animal is alot smaller and i would not consider putting them in together until i know all is ok and it can defend itself it if had to.

It will not eat at all.

Why do thay take so long to settle in.

It may just be some what more timid in behaviour then it's counter part.
Seems that you have over come the obvious problems that can in effect account for it's behaviour.
Like most monitors; Spencers are quite switched on......
Until it settles in; keep handling; cage disturbances to a minimum....even put a cover over the front of the enclosure if it's situated in a high traffic area with your house.
IMO; monitors respond well to a set routine....eg a morning mist spray; food bowl provided; quick clean spot clean....then leave it be. It's still early days; and i wouldn't worry to much at this stage.
