Need some info/help!

The last few days I have noticed that my stimmies throat is looking a little puffy, similar to the way a tree snake displays threat. I cannot hear him wheezing when he breaths, there is no mucus or fluid discharges around his mouth or nose. He is still eating fine, and his temps haven't changed (30 32 hot end - 25 27 cool end).

Anyone with some info please reply as I cannot find anything in any of my herp books.

Cheers - Craig.

RE: Need some info/help!

It could be an RI, puffy throat is a common indication. Puffy/flabby throat can also be due to a shed on the way, impending regurgitation and no doubt a heap more causes than I know about.

I think at this stage, you just have to keep a close eye and ear on your snake and see if you can pick up any further indications that may lead you to suspect one cause over another.

Reduce handling (having said that, sometimes the only way to know there is a breathing problem is to 'feel' the rumble in the lungs when holding your snake, as it isn't always audible), monitor it well and keep us updated with any changes.

RE: Need some info/help!

Thanks for the input Wrasse. I will keeping a good eye on him. He was the first snake I ever bought. If anything happened I would be devastated, he is my baby.

RE: Need some info/help!

Is this sort of thing common in snakes?

Is there more to preventing diseases than just keeping them clean? I mean, are there supplements to add to food or water which aid in preventing problems. My birds are given regular (2 days on, 3 days off) doses of sulfaquin purely for prevention measures. Should I do something similar for my snake? Maybe not that often but anything I should know in keeping him healthy, I'd love to hear
Kathy
