open mouth basking

this is my first beardie so i haven't come across this before:
i've only seen him do this several times in the month and a half i've had him
he sits on his bask spot raises his head to look at the heat globe and opens his mouth, doesn't stay like that for long though. i've heard of similar symptoms in other reptile when they have an RI. he's still active and eating really well but i'm just a bit curious what it's about.

Could be RI, but alot of basking reptiles (salties) open their mouths while heating up to lower the temperature of their skull (and therefore brain) without lowering their body temp. So instead of going to a cooler part, and losing heat, he just opens his mouth so his brain doesn't fry...

It's common for beardies to have a RI when coming out of brumation, they will gape when they are cold though and usually have a cough. A hot beardie will gape to cool down and this is perfectly normal.

i haven't let him go into brumation and there's no other symptoms, reassuring to hear other have seen this as well.
becswillbe- mine does the same thing its like oh looking too cute can't let her see me do this
i reackon it's probably cooling down since he only does it directly under the bask spot.
thanks everyone, i'll keep watching him though

I just noticed my girl doing this tonight (gaping) but it was while she was basking under the heat lamp, so I'm guessing it's just because she was hot.

dont mean to hijack, but the male digs into his hide in the cool end and goes to sleep for a few days, then wakes up, basks for a bit, then goes back to sleep.....................

is this also normal, i have the uv and basking light on during the day, and everything off at night as its in the lounge room, and the fireplace keeps the room warm.

yes , he is just heating himself up, could be for varius reasons "that only he knows" but is perfectly normal. It could be for digestion, calcium absorbtion, or just cause he wants to.
