Probing

Hey all, before i get flamed, just chill, its just a question !!! I spoke to a very experienced person (28 years) and he said that probing was quite easy but to be very careful cos there parts are sensitive if your rough...He basicly said that (in a snake), if you put a lil lube on the probe and the appropriate size probe it should go in fairly easy...he said a male snake the probe should go in a small way towards the back, but a female wouldnt really go in much...

Im not thinkin of doin it, but id like to know if someone could explain the procedure and tell me if it is really as easy as he says...(besides my snake is only 8 mths old, and he recommends waiting till its 2.5 years old)...

what do you experienced peeps think....thanx

Ash...

i want to know the sex if mine as well, i guess its easy enough to take it in to a pet shop, but chances are whoever does it probably has little experience as well..

Basically what you have said is correct, although males can probe fairly deep.

i got my diamond probed at around 7 or 8 months and the vet did it easy as pie it doesnt take long at all, but dont do it yourself watever u do be sure to get an experienced herper or a vet to do it as u can hurt them if not done correctly.
my diamond had no problems being probed that young and it should be ok to do it at this age imo. however i have heard from numerous people that u shouldn't do it until they r older.
in the end its up 2 u and wat u want for your herp

yer thats what i meant, he said a male would go to a depth of roughly 6 scales or so, but a female would be quite shallow...The prob i have peregrinus is that the closest exp person is more than 2000kms away...I live in Broome and my vet are not really deal with herps...

yer well this person i know said that they probe at 2.5 years cos thats when they get sexually mature and that its easy to hurt them, specially when they are young...does your vet have much exp with herps?

no it wasnt my vet i usually go to. it was a friend i no who keeps snakes herself and has done so for many years so i guess u could say shes experienced. but if u live that far away from anyone that can do it then its probly best not to get it probed that is unless u want it for breeding purposes

well i do want it for breeding, but as i said he is only 8 mths old at the moment, so i will be waiting a while anyways, would be good, just so i can buy another that i can watch grow up the same time as him/her...I breed Indian ringneck parrots and am a big fan of knowing their backgrounds...any one that buys of a breeder IMO should be able to ring the breeder and have all details of their history incl parents, illnesses, feeding, temper, sheds, etc etc

Age or size doesn't matter at all.Snakes can be probed from the time they hatch right up until adult size.As long as it done carefully it won't cause any problems whatsoever.

You can probe them after their 1st shed (approx 10 days)
I wait a few days longer though.

yer, he did sya that they can be done young, he just doesnt recommend it...ive also read that it matters more on the size an conditio (in breeding), so maybe its just him that breeds at 2.5, im not entirely sure on that one...
