Question Question from newbie wanting to purchase shingle backs in near future

Hi all, have been perusing this site most nights for the past 3 weeks gaining information etc. But have noticed that it seems to be hard to purchase shingle backs.

Is it just that they are not a common species of lizard to purchase, or are they just not popular as pets? I was hoping to purchase a pair once my licence comes through, but after many hours of surfing the net, it seems they are hard to come by.

Any info appreciated and as I am in Queensland, if anyone knows of anyone who breeds them in or around Brissy, please let me know,

Thanks heaps

Thanks for that missllamathuen, funny u mention SA cos thats where I grew up, and we had them as pets when I was a kid! We'd rescue injured ones etc and keep them till they were better and then release them, hence the reason why I would love some again now.

Good to see they are still pretty common down there, but for some reason they seem to be a bit scarce up here in QLD.....so once my licence comes thru will definitely post a wanted ad.

Thanks again

Think they need really dry conditions and humidity can cause them loads of probs. Don't know if Qld is suitable...

But I'm really no expert so you'd be better to ask someone else who knows more than me!

Yes I think QLD is too humid and wet for them. They like really dry humidity.

G'day,

They are definitely one of the most underated lizards to keep in captivity. They have heaps of character and are fairly easy to look after.

In Queensland, it is absolutely imperative to keep them very dry. We keep ours in an airconditioned room, on Breeders Choice, with only the smallest of water bowls. If kept too humid, they are prone to respiratory infections, fungal diseases and eye problems.

You can generally pick up a pair for $200-300, unless they are "red" form Western Australian animals which will set you back around $1000 for a pair.
