Have any of you guys documented sperm retention in carpet pythons ...?
has any one got any information at all on this subject please help me out here ?
im asking as i have a clutch of jungles and one odball that appears Jaguar ..
now the last time the female seen the jaguar was oct 06 could this happen after all this time
i always thought that new sperm would simply be used and any retained would be disregarded
could it survive that length of time in the female ?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated
Help me out here guys
Cheers
Steve

I know it has been documented at 12 month's in Blood pythons, but haven't heard of the time scales associated with carpets, I would imagine it is quite possible though.

I would of said unlikely, but that is very interesting indeed, the truth of the matter is that the answer you seek is not conclusively proven either way. I know of cases of antaresia producing fertile clutches without being with males for 18 months prior.
Most evidence is hearsay rather than scientific! I wouldn't say impossible who knows! Quote:

I've never seen any written documentation, but I have heard from different sources that a female can hold sperm for up to two years. That's all I've heard though. I wouldn't have a clue if it true, and even if it were true, I couldn't say weather the retained sperm could fertalise an egg along side new sperm. Sorry Steve, but I will see what I can find out for you though.
Cheers,
Nic.

Female pythons can definately retain viable fertile sperm from copulations atleast 2 to 3 months before ovulation .
I have had a example of this happening from a female jungle carpet python aged 2 and half years old that produced a clutch of 8 eggs from 2 mating opertunities 8 to 10 weeks before i observed ovulation .
No further mating introductions were made because the female did not appear to be growing follicals and i was focused on introducing the breeder male to my other 3 breeding females at the time .
All 8 eggs are appeared fertile but i did not candle them.
Anyway 6 healthy hatchlings emerged from the clutch
proving the female stored sperm from those copulations at that time .
Steve
I do beleive the Jag looking neonate you hatched from your jungle clutch is the result of a stored sperm from the previous years copulations and a couple of the other hatchies look like jag sibs with reduced head patterns etc
cheers
Roger
