My rats eat their babies when they are either too cold or have run out of water/food (oops).

What are you feeding them? Sometimes they will eat their babies when their diet is lacking in something. Cheers Cheryl

Sometimes they eat the babies if they are disturbed too early, and I've heard of it happening if the male is left in when she's having/just had the babies.
Both sexes will eat the babies, and sometimes they're just not 'programmed right' for breeding. A bit like humans really...except we do other things other than eat babies.

I feed them YS Rat pellets. They also occassionally get carrot, apples, and bread.
It happens most often when they run out of water. The rats probably take this as an indicator of hard times to follow and thus abort their litter.

Cheers Cheryl | I to have found that sometimes they require a protein top up, I usually throw in a handful of high protein dog food one a fortnight, and I don't get the problem very often now.
However, you have sometimes to watch out for cannibal mothers or other more dominant females that just don't want another rats young in her cage, if this happens a few times, it's easier to feed off the offending rodent!

I used to keep 3 tubs of 1M 4F, and I never had the problem.
They were kept on the garage floor too, so in terms of being disturbed, they would be disturbed all day. I used to check on them every night. If one of the mums looks like she is going to drop, I would temporarily empty out her tank mates and spread them into the other tubs. As soon as she drops I just put a small plastic tub in the larger one and she would nest and guard them. Once she has the nest setup, I would return the tank mates.. I usually only wanted pinks or fuzzies, so they were never left that long. Towards the end of my rat breeding adventures I did require adults and would basically put the weaners in their own small tub until they hit small adult size, then reintroduce them to the others, etc..

mostly as people have pointed out it is to do with the food, ie lacking in certain trace elements etc.

they will also eat there offspring if there is wild mice or rats runing around on top of their cages, they seem to do it to get them before the wild ones do ( I don't know for shore just a theory) But if you have wild rodents running around they will eat there own babies and also if there is not enough meat in their diet.

I'm thinking it may have some thing to do with stress, from overcrowding, lack of food / water or having more than one male in the same tub. Once whilst in Taronga Zoo's rat / mouse rooms, I asked if they had that problem, and was suprised as they said they have never noticed, ( I was in the mouse room at the time and they run a trio in each tub) I originally thought the answer was a little strange but since then have kept my mice in lower numbers and have found they breed more, cost less to keep and don't eat their offspring (but I still don"t trust them!). Off subject abit, Years ago a friend of mine breed her bull terrier and to her discust, it fished off all the babies over a couple of days, leaving body parts here and there. She decided to get it de-sexed!
