So, I'm well aware of the reasons that it isn't safe to re-freeze food for our humans with our relatively pathetic digestive and immune systems*, but I'm wondering if anyone does it with rodents that aren't taken on the first go? One of my pythons is less hungry as winter's started, and it seems a waste to throw out any mouse she happens to turn her nose up at in a particular week. Does anyone re-freeze? Anyone ever seen a snake to get sick after eating something that had been re-heated?
Secondly, does anyone feed their snakes live insects? I've just read about small crocs being given live grasshoppers for a bit of stimulation, and wondered if my girls might appreciate the same thing.
Cheers,
Kathryn
* For those who aren't aware, freezing does not kill the majority of bacteria - once the food is re-heated the come back full force, multiply as much as they can, and become dormant again when the food is frozen a second time. Reheat, wake up, multiply; rinse, repeat. The more often you reheat, the more bugs you get. Not good.

Thawing allows large populations of bacteria to form. If the food isn't consumed and then re-frozen those large colonies of bacteria slow down and become dormant. Then when you re-defrost those numbers grow exponentially. At this point you can get serious infections of gut damaging bacteria for humans, snakes and in fact pretty much most animals.
One case would probably be enough to say nun-nite to your best friend snakey |

Hi Kathryn ,
Just to expand on what others have already said... The vast majority of Australian snakes won't eat insects. There are exceptions (such as blind snakes) and some semi-aquatic colubrid snakes feed on crustaceans, but certainly the pythons and commonly kept elapids would turn up their noses at insects.

if the rodent is to cold when you offer it to them and dont take it, its ok to rehheat it straight away. just dont refreeze and try again later............ correct me if im wrong.

Ah, thats why you need a goanna ! Plenty of snakes overseas eat insects, some pretty much only eat insects even, but not many Australian snakes have been recorded eating insects, and certainly none specialise in eating them, so best stick to rodents ect. If you breed your own though, it worries you little if they don't get eaten, esp if you have a hungry monitor (they are always hungry).
