Relocating Snakes?

you'll find that snakes that end up in backyards have a tendency to go back into urban areas after being moved, even if it's a different backyard. I catch snakes around the north west of Melbourne and by law we have to let them go within 5K of where they were picked up. Heath Buttler did an interesting study on translocated snakes. I charge $100 but i've heard of some people charging up to $300.

Let him go in the fauna park and hope he settles in there.

I forgot to mention one thing there is 3 councils around melbourne that have a snake handler on call to remove snakes for free. Brimbank council has one but he either takes a while to get there or he won't hang around if he can't find it. I've picked a few calls from that area because he wouldn't do it.

here are some pics of the little bugger,as you can see by the shape of his neck he must have sustained an injury at one time.
looks like a bite was taken from it by a ..who knows, could have been a rat, dog, even a bird or a lawnmower.
anyway, he had fully healed, and put on a fiesty little act when i released him.

Werribee have their own rangers that do it (9 to 5 weekdays) I get the overflow, Hobsons Bay has Tom, but they're sending more and more work my way, so who's out at Brimbank?? first I've heard of them having someone.

The problem with the 5k rule in the built up environments today pretty much means the death of the snake. i dont believe it should be more than a 1000metres. I agree with the comment that snakes will turn up again in urban back yards but thats logical as its their range. nobody bothers to think about this when they develop sites. Its also were the food is most abundant usually.

If 5000 metres is going to be the death of the sake in built up enironments, how is 1000 meters going to be better????
Most responsible Snake Catchers know their areas and know where the best snake habitats are in those areas. It's not just a case of "Oh, I have to get rid of it within 5 klms so I'll just dump it anywhere within that 5 klms".
Sometimes it's just not practical or possible to release the animal close to the capture site.

Don't know the guy's name but Brimbank has had someone collecting snakes sinced we moved to St Albans 30 years ago.

In his defence he's probably overloaded, I lived next to Brimbanks dog catcher and he quit because they expected him to do too many things.

Hence my post asking for help, my gal and I were initally ready to let him go back in the Fauna park behind us, but I was more worried about him being in the best place in the area. Thanks again ssssnakeman !!

no worries ash ,
i found a great place for him within the 5 ks.the fauna park behind you is quite large and
there were heaps of places to put him.
ash,the way you described how you bagged it ,with the stick and the pillowcase and the flicking, made me shudder a bit and i didnt want to take the chance of you get getting tagged during the release.
you did a great job yourself though mate,
