There seems to be a general consensus that there is not enough talk about reptiles at the moment. Well here is your chance. People have suggested a FAQ section. The problem is that for every question, you will bet 5 different answers and sometimes they can all be right.
What I suggest is that we have sticky threads of FAQs with answers from the members of the site. This way everyone has input and there is no definitive answer but opinions from everyone. Don't worry if you are not as experienced as some other members, if you have something to contribute feel free to post. We want as many opinions as possible no just one or two.
Once everyone has contributed, the off topic comments will be removed and the thread will be made a 'sticky thread'.
This is the first Frequently asked question:
I am a newbie. What sort of python should I get?
(That's all the info you get)

Sounds like a good idea, but even a question like that requires more information what size do you want it to end up at, is it for display only and not for handeling, how much do you want to spend, in door out door, etc I don't think it is going to be that easy. The right snake for the right person.

i would advise a coastal or m.d python for first one as they both seem to be pretty bomb proof.
you also have a good chance of picking up one of these snakes that has a temperment more suited to the newby.easy to keep

Moose_ It's not really my idea, I few people have suggested it. I have just decided to implement it.

Well for best python to cover all sizes
you could do the best one in size catorgories. Maybe to come up with an overall answer maybe you could run a poll. The one with highest votes.
Just a suggestion.

any python i guess , each individual python has a different personality , some are fiery and some are placid. but from another point of view some are easier to look after and some are alot cheaper aswell. i recommend a coastal or a diamond.

Coastals, Diamonds, Murry Darlings, childreni, Spotted, Stimmies Are the ones I usually suggest depending on info given but not to say that any would be correct for any specific person.

100+ views but only 7 replies? If you want to make this site better, you gotta contribute your opinions.
John- You were probably just making a joke but but your reply is a valid one. Whenever newbies ask this question, they usually get told to do a search by one of the members.

i think one that appeals to you most
if you get a plcid one like mentioned above you may not enjoy it as much as it doesnt apeal to that person
i think a good python for beginners is whatever they want
but if the question was what is easiest to handle with a good temprament
i would go with what mayo said

I would answer along these lines:
It would depend on the size of the snake you wish to keep.
If you are only wanting 1 of the smaller species that grow to approx 1.5m I would suggest a Childrens or Stimsons python. If you were after something with reasonable size approx 7-8 foot I would highly suggest a Murray Darling or a Bredli.
Those species that I have suggested are thought of as rather placid. They make great beginner species & a wonderful introduction to the Herp hobby. Just as a side not it may take several years for the animal to reach its ultimate size & weight so with that in mind purchasing a larger species now such as the MD or Bredli or even a Diamond or Coastal, you will gain ALOT more knowledge & confidence in holding larger species between now and when the animal is an adult IMO
Choose one of the following if they appeal to you and be sure to ask the breeder many questions regarding your purchase. Get as much info as possible, feeding, shedding, age, sex etc all vital & important info that would hopefully be documented by the breeder and assist you. If however another species appeals to you or you are not interested in the above animals than try doing a search & study on the species you are more attracted to, ask a few members here about them & contact some breeders of that particular species. I am sure you will get pointed in the right direction regarding temprement

Well I guess the deciding factors for most newbies in the choice of their first snake would be temperament, adult size, housing & care requirements & $$ so i'm going to say any of the Antaresia species as a first snake. They are generally not too bitey & most seem to grow out of being snappy anyway, they are not massive so can be kept in a smaller enclosure than Morelia species, they are quite a hardy snake & have very easy care requirements & most the Antaresias are pretty reasonably priced so they are affordable for most people.
