Rescued Python

Can anyone please help me. I received a phone call about an hour ago from a friend who has basically been lumped with an 8 ft diamond/carpet python & he has no licence. He was told the snake has been kept in captivity its whole life & when the owner died recently the family, who dont like snakes were going to kill it , which is how he ended up with it. He doesnt want to keep the snake & was going to release it but rang me first to see if thats ok.I obviously said no NOT OK & now want to know is there any legal way I can take this snake? I do not want to do anything to jeapordise my RK licence or get my mate in trouble as he did rescue the poor python. Any info would really be appreciated as I cant contact anyone official untill tomorrow

Cheers Kyro

Was it held on licence before?
If not, surrender it to NPWS and they will ballot it or give it to a zoo / park.

Contact NPWS and talk to them. Would be the best thing to do.

Contact NPWS and explain the situation.
As it has been kept in captivity & there is no accurate locality info on the animal it can not be released. NPWS may allow you to keep the animal provided you fill in the appropriate application.

PS, Dont go doing this with WC animals to get them on licence

I had the same situation with a shingleback. NPWS said it had to be handed to a herp society. Are you a member of one with a non-releasable list?

i cant see why if you find some one keeping reptiles that have been captive bred all there life and arnt on a license that there isnt a way to legalise the reptile.
i guess there would be to many people rorting the system but the legite reptile keeper's who want to save these reptile's are being punished.
But if there is a way i'd like to hear about what the npws have to say on the matter?

There are ways to legalise it, but that isn't to say that anyone involved in the situation will be the one to keep it.

Hi every one, I spoke to the licence Dept at NPWS & unfortunately didn't get much help. The person I spoke to said the animal could be legalized but wouldn't do it & couldn't understand why my mate even saved the snake let alone why I wanted to keep it, call the RSPCA or local animal shelter so I gave up there & rang EPA. They said they didnt understand beacause NPWS usually prefer not to bother trying to find the snake a home if someone is willing to keep it & has appropriate licencing, they suggested to contact my local branch of NPWS & possibly have them organize the paper work. So I did that & spoke to a very compassionate person (she liked snakes ) that couldn't do the paper work but passed on a couple more phone numbers for NPWS where hopefully someone can help, fingers crossed. Will keep you all posted!
cheers Kyro
