Scrubby Question

Hi all,
Just a quick question regarding scrubby sheding. I got my first amethyst python a few months ago. She is eating fine and is very healthy. She has just finished her second shed, both times they have been bad, the second time i had to drop her in a warm bath to get all the excess skin off. So my question is, does anyone else who has scrubbies find that they have to increase the humidity in the enclosure during the shed phase? I have asked a couple of people i know that have scrubbies and they both told me that there ones usually are fine.
Any feed back would be much appreciated.

RE: Scrubby Question

Considering where scrubs are from, I would think they would like high humidity.
I know my water pythons needed higher humidity for shedding than my carpets and stims when I lived down south.

RE: Scrubby Question

I had the same problem with mine they are about 15months old, perhaps it is something to do with the age.

RE: Scrubby Question

Doea it have a water bowl; that it can soak in? this might be something that will help or even giving it a 'nest box' type of hide during its shed cycle, that contains sphagnum moss.

RE: Scrubby Question

Thanks guys. The air is pretty dry in Bathurst at the best of times. I have to increase humidty for my olives as well. Just wasn't too sure about the scrubbs.
Magpie, will we be seeing you in sunny Bathurst for the races this year?

RE: Scrubby Question

Sorry Joel, not this year
Maybe in a year or two we might have an APS meet during the race weekend.

Scrubbies are mostly found in the rainforest and on it's margins, so they definately live in a high humidity environment. Olives are definately found in much drier areas.

Gordo, I found a lot of my snakes would not soak before shedding, I had to make the whole cage or one of their hides humid enough.

RE: Scrubby Question

scrubbies really appreciate huge water bowls that they can totally submerge in if its possible for you to have in the enclosure.

RE: Scrubby Question

Thanks for all the feed back. Wil, my scrubby is only a few months old so i put her in a large plastic tub with about 50mm of warm water in the bottom. Then i sat and watched her until the old skin was loose enough to come off.
Nick, i wish you would tell my olives they don't need extra humidity when they are shedding. It would be one less thing for me to check on.
Thanks again for all the answers to my post.

Cheers

Joel

Hi Joel,

My scrub is around 3 years old, and up until a year ago, all his sheds came off in pieces and always required checking. He retained his first 2 sheds and required a good soak then, but now all I do is squirt the walls of his enclosure with water up near the heat source after the opaque stage. He still does it in bits sometimes, but there is a dramatic improvement. Maybe it is something that is common when they are young reading this thread.
It used to really stress me when he was younger, sometimes the sheds came off literally scale by scale.
