Serious Breeding Information

There's been a few threads started regarding breeding and the do's & don'ts of how to!
We are getting our reptiles ready for next season and I would seriously love to pick everyone's brains (as there are alot of knowledgeable people on here)! We are buying all the fancy books etc but sometimes that doesn't help unless you get some hands-on experience etc. So please feel free to post your thoughts and what works for you (and what doesn't work)!

We'd like ideas on incubators and how people have them set up (whether it's a fancy expensive model or a cheapo put together from Bunnings materials).

We'd like any tips or words of advice when it comes to the cooling over winter and introducing male to female. How do you know when the deed has been done and do you then take the male out?

Information regarding the hatchies would be great and how people have them set up after birth etc (we loved Glimmerman's hatchy rack he has for sale)!

Please feel free to post pics and descriptions and if you don't want to post your thoughts or ideas... please PM me!!
Would appreciate all and any information you can pass on to me and others on this website wanting to get started in the area of breeding!

Thanking you all in advance
Mell

Hi Mell, Ive asked this question today, and still waiting for some serious breeding answers, eg, when we should start changing the temps, ie. warm days and cool nights. We are ok re incubator as we have a Multiquip Incubator, and also a Multiquip Hatcher. Still wondering whether we need both machines??? If we don't need the Hatcher we will maybe sell it for a good price. Actually, I think both machines keep the temps the same. Incubator will automatically tip for any sort of bird eggs if necessary. Cheers Cheryl

Steps to breeding Bredli

1/ Stop feeding them at around the 1st of May. Leave on normal heat for 7-10 days or until snakes defecate.

2/ After snakes defecate, turn night time heating completely off. Keep day time max temps to 30-32 deg. Do this for two weeks. At this point it may be wise to reduce the size of the water bowl, as cold & humid environments can sometimes be detrimental to a snakes health.

3/ After two weeks at reduced temps, introduce the male to the female. Continue with the reduced temps, and allow the pair to remain together for 3-4 days then separate.

4/ Offer the female a feed, if she takes it turn her night time heating back on and raise the day temps to a max of 30 until she defecates. If you will be using more than one female, you might rotate the male between enclosures whilst waiting for the female to defecate (give him 2 days off between girlies). If she doesn’t take it, leave the heating as is and reintroduce the male after 2 days.

5/ Repeat step 4 until the female refuses a feed, or until you are certain she has conceived. You can also decide to give up if they have shown no interest and try again next year. Once you decided either way, return the male to his enclosure and resume normal heating for both the female & male. Offer the male a feed.

If you’ve been successful, your female should shed within a month. This is her pre-lay shed. As soon as she sheds, ensure to place a suitable nest box in her enclosure. You can continue to offer her small food items if she will take them.

Is the info above correct? If anyone has corrections to make, please do so.. Trueblue, Indicus??

Instead of an esky i and most others use a fridge. Works very well.

We do know of a serious Reptile Breeder with a Reptile Shop(not URS) in Adelaide, who "says" he never cools his Pythons, and they just do their thing when they are ready???

I completely forgot about Doc Rocks' (Simon Stone of Southern Cross Reptiles) articles on Breeding Pythons. They do go into a lot of relevant details. Here's the link - http://www.southernxreptiles.com/RA%...CLE%20PAGE.htm Cheers Cheryl
