well i'm about to get an ackie. i had the same dilema as you but decided on the ackies as i love their pattern and colour and they get a good size that not to big and not to little go to youtube and look at some videos, there are some cool ackie/ ridgetail monitor ones.

I had kept storrs monitors as my first introduction into monitors because of their relatively small size, but then i bought 5 Sandfire W.A ackies and you just cant beat their bright reds, yellows, oranges and black colourations along with the amount of exploring they do in the enclosure. They have huge appetites and will readily take anything. Because of their smallish-medium size you can easily house a small colony in say a 4x2 enclosure but obviously bigger is better. One thing that monitors require is a very hot basking spot ranging from 50-70+ degrees to help with digestion and activity.
Hope it helps.

i've just got a pair of ackies.
4 months old now and i love them. They're antics are so funny.
But i would get sandies if i had the room for them.
And i wouldn't bux just one. Always 2 or 3

I looked into monitors a little while ago and found it difficult to get much information about captive requirements. I recently got a few books on australian monitors from the library and they were quite good describing sizes etc. I was always a fan of the red sand coloured monitors and I found them quite striking. I too chose beardies because them seemed not to eat as much and required lower temps (that suited me more at the time). Good luck and from what I found out from my research was don't get 1 get 2 or 3 and they like lots of room and high temps and yeah they eat a whole lot.
