My issue is that he is big and likes to run so getting him in a bath is difficult, I was thinking of a more localised approach cotton bud water? he will bite me so I wanted to make sure i have his head secured.

Get a damp towel and cover his head with it. As he wriggles through it replace it. After a while it should come away itself.

I had a BHP with this, The advice I was given was to place him in a moistened snake bag and let him move around in the for 20 min or so. The high humidity and friction with the bag will help move the lens.
It worked for me. Good luck with taking care of it |

My advice would be to leave it and let it come off with the next shed. Trying to remove it yourself could damage the snake's eye

yea vat...thats a quick way to an infected eye! If it wasnt an eye scale i'd tend to agree..but eye scales need to come off or they can get infected very quickly.
To help it come off u need to increase the humidity as ppl hav suggested. Either a bath, damp towel, damp snake bag etc. Just ensure u use warm water so the snake doesn't cool down too much.

Really? Well hey I'm just going off what I've read. Thankfully I've never had it happen to me before.
Guess I should throw out my herp books.

We have used a moist cottonbud(make sure it is moist)before to remove the lens cap,we remove it by going the same way it would normally shed.We have never had a problem by using this method as we have a snake that we have to assit in shedding most times . |

I too have the same problem, my BHP has retained a lens cap too.
Didn't realise it was such a common problem.

Before reading this thread I would've said the same as Vat69, thanks for the info Mork & womanator.
Leaving it in a moist bag for a while sounds like the easiest way to soak it, a bath won't work as the snake most likely won't keep its head underwater.
Good luck & let us know how you go.

MISSION STATUS: COMPLETE
DEBRIEF: Using a combination of warm wet towel and moist cotton bud succesfully removed
cap without getting tagged, was far simplier than i envisioned.
Thanks for the advice eveyone he is being cooled for breeding also so that was also in my mind
when i thought about leaving it.
thanks again.
