Hi All,
I've just got my first snake, a children's python. I've had him/her for about a 2 weeks. The thing is i very rarely ever see him/her out and about, he/she is always in the rock we bought, the only time he comes out is when i get him out to play. i also have to take the rock out of the enclosure for him to feed. is this normal???

I'm new to snakes also, but I'm pretty sure most people here will say yes from what I've gathered. Just give him/her time to settle in some more, but yeah. They love their hides
A lot of other people here can give you a better answer. But aslong as he/she looks healthy and isn't acting overly weird apart from hiding. You have nothing to worry about.

If you want an interactive pet, get a dog.
Not only are snakes nocturnal so will mainly come out at night....but they feel safe in their hides so will spent alot of time in them.
...That's what I've learnt from this site anyway

Don't be mean Tatelina :p
It's just a simple question.
He wasn't saying "This is lame." he was just asking out of the snakes well being

The best time to watch is at night with a blacklite . In the wild they only move around to hunt and mate .

A red light on the other hand may be ok - this is why heating globes are red, not blue.
Some animals such as reptiles can actually see into the UV spectrum, so this would disturb their normal night time pattern and could make them feel very uncomfortable.
Maccies and children's pythons are, as suggested, nocturnal. Over time they will come out during the day. My spotted has no worries showing herself during the day.
Make sure they have a few good hides and plenty to crawl, climb etc over at night.
And time... time... time...

Mate give him more time to settle in before you 'play' - he may still be a little stressed...
You have only had it 2 weeks and so it should only just be settling in...leave it alone for a little while and see how it goes...

I've had mine for bout 9 months now and he was shy to start with, usually roams around through the day, except when he's coming onto a shed. He has been in his rock for 2 weeks now, but soon as he sheds he'll be out roaming again.
IMO Give yours some more time to settle, when he's comfortable he/she will venture out occasionally. if you put a have a red light watch him at night when the house is all dark and you will see your snake out of it's hide.

my bredli usually hang out in their hide during day light hours and for the majority of the evening, but late at night when i come out for a midnight snack or a post coital cigarette they are quite active.... it's the best time to observe them.
