Sleepy Beardie

Hi,

I have 2 black soil beardies and have had them for just over a month. One is bigger than the other and he eats well and responds well to stimuli (he will watch me moving around). The other one is and has always been smaller and doesn't seem to want to eat as much as the other beardie (but still eats when fed). It sleeps most of the time and doesn't seem to be curious or respond very well to stimuli. They don't seem to dislike each other as they often sleep next to each other or one on top of the other! I was just wondering if this was normal or if there is anything I can do to help Jub-Jub (should have called her sleepy!) Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Amy

Hi eevarn.

Been there, done that, sounds pretty familiar mate! Doesn't sound like anything to worry about to me, especially if the smaller one is still eating. My black soils are approx 6mths old and one is just like you describe - but about half the size of the others.

They will be slowing down now coming into colder weather, especially if you don't have night time heating, as the nights are getting colder.

Update on Jub-Jub the Sleepy Beardie

Hello, I just thought id let you all know that sadly, Jub-Jub passed away on Saturday. The weekend before she started a tail shed and would not eat or open her eyes. I bathed her to help with the shed and trickled water over her head to make her drink which she did for the first part of the week. I tried to get food into her by placing squashed cricket on her nose so when she was licking the water she would lick the food into her mouth. She basically spat the food out and would not eat at all. I tried allsorts of things to get her to eat, mostly rubbing different foods on her nose but I spose she was in too much pain. I couldn't force feed her cos she was really little and fragile. By the end of the week she wouldn't even drink. She wasn't impacted either, she had nothing in her little belly. At least she is at peace now.

On another note, Eevarn is shedding at the moment but is still quite active and eating heaps. I think I will just stick with him and not get a replacement for Jub-Jub at all.

That's the second beardie I've encountered called Jub-Jub!
I was a bit worried when I had two beardies being reclusive around a bigger cage mate..since seperating the bigger one, both of the younger smaller ones are much more active and alert. Perhaps they are slightly intimidated? Seems like no one else thinks that so I'm probably wrong.

So sorry to hear that mate. It makes me worry about my runt of the litter. It is sleeping now a lot more than usual, and more than its clutch mates, and already being so small, I will have to keep a very close eye on her over these colder months.

Thank you to everyone for your condolences and esp. to Miss Morph-lette for attending the funeral.

Tatelina, I have actually read on other beardie forums that keeping beardies together is a bad idea due to the intimidation factor. In fact on a US forum, they recommend not keeping them together at all so your idea may not be far off. I thought they got along fine and monitored them for any signs of agression etc but you never know what an animal is thinking unless its "I'm hungry"....
