Snails

Hi, after all the rain sydney has had over the last week i have an influx of snails in the yard, and
was wondering if anyone keeps and breeds them as a sorce of food.
I have a few eastern blueys and would like to have a more permanent food supply for them
Any Hints
Cheers Owen

I kept them for a little while but was never able to keep them going. I kept them simialr to the way you would with woodies but gave them a spray of water every day. I had no idea what i was doing and in the end i was never able to breed them quick enough before i needed to feed them to my animals.

Simone.

Freeze them for when you need them.
Breeding them is a very slow process.

u might be better off planting a whole lot of veg in the garden. provide some damp hiding places for the snails nearby (eg stack some bricks to leave narrow dark crevices etc). this way you could probably havest them as needed. u my need to leave them be for some time to allow for numbers to build up.
i havn't tried this, it just seems like it would work.
good luck.

If no ones breeding them and we're always collecting..doesn't logic say that EVENTUALLY we'll have hardly any in our backyards?
I wonder if there's a market for breeding snails... *ponders*

Harvesting things doesn't necessarily cause a reduction in their population. I can run over several thousand Cane Toads each day, but the population won't decrease. Fortunately, this doesn't only apply to exotics, or we'd be well and truly out of snakes by now. If everyone had pet snail-eating lizards, maybe we'd see a notable reduction in snail numbers in suburban areas, but even then I wouldn't be too hopeful - commercially sold snail poison has only slowed them down a little bit. Helix aspersa (the big mottled snail in our gardens) is a nasty, introduced, pest species which causes a lot of damage.

Bredli84 I collected them from my parents house as we have 3 wild blueys in the yard and never see any snails (even on our vegetable patches). I collected 2 dozen from the folks place as i know they don't bait so i feel safe in that they have been poisoned. Ill try a few of the suggestions
