Hi, just wanted to get some expert oppinions on the reasons for a snake not using it's tongue. The reason I ask is a mate of mine just purchased a expensive NT Black Head Python that was sold as feeding but found out later isn't, but the other thing she noticed when she got it is it's never used it's tongue. After more than a week passed it still hadn't used it's tonue (not at all). Even when food was offered no tongue movement. So we decided to have a look inside it's mouth and the tongue looked very different compaired to other snakes I've seen. There was no opening were the tongue comes out, the tonge just looked like this big slopy rolled up piece inside her mouth (not hidden at all and not covered by anything) she can't move it at all and it actually flops out the side of her mouth and she can't get it back in. What would the causes or reasons for this be, and would this be affecting her health and eating?. The reason I ask is she has no interest in food what so ever, nothing we try even slightly gets her attention. She was force fed once but the person who sold my friend the snake could he have damaged it. . Whne the breeder was told she wasn't using her tongue, he suggested that she was sick due to wrong temps, but at the time my friend had only had her no more than 3 days?

Woh what?
I don't know much about the health and anatomy of snakes but that sounds like a case of a breeder falsely selling an animal that is 'feeding' already!
My first thought was VET!
Am interested if any older herpers have any ideas...

Yeah it's going to a vet don't worry first thing in the morning. I had a look at it for her tonight and same don't know enough abouts the ins and outs but fefinetly enough to know that wasn't right. I just thought I would get some other opinions on here before she takes it just to see if it's common or this breader has really done the dirty. I mean he already has by selling a non feeding BHP that is well quite expensive because of what it is, but to sell a snake that's also in a bad way well that's another.

go to the vet. some snakies are born without a tongue (rare though), this may also be the problem.

Lack of tounge movement is generally associated with respiratory infection.

im confused as to how exactly you know that the snake did no feed for the breeder, regardless of whether you have been able to get it to feed yourself.
Take it to a vet (should have been your first move, not checking online forums) because quite clearly, something major is wrong. Bump the heat of the enclosure a little (2-4) deg.

Bump the heat of the enclosure a little (2-4) deg. | Ok just to clarify it's not my snake, second of all we know it was not feeding because at first the breeder said it was when asked, and once it was delivered to my mate and the question was asked of what it was feeding on he said it had only had one previous feed which was a assist feeding so didn't eat on it's own free will. Wich as most know BHP's are hard to get feeding for experienced breeders let alone someone with no experience in assist feeding at all, and for the price she paid for it it definetly should have been eating. If we had of known it was eating she wouldn't have purchased it. Ok the breeder was contacted about there being no tongue movement, he said it was due to it having a flu, and to up the temps etc etc which was done (although I doubt it caught a flue in a barely 3 days she had it). When this didn't work we decided last night to have a look inside it's mouth to see if it even had a tongue, which it did but it was lifeless (no movement at all and no feeling) so first thing this morning it was taken to a vet (it couldn't be taken at midnight last night when I posted on this forum). And I was only asking as to get other profesionals opinions on is this a common thing and what are the most common causes. Anyway so it's been taken to a vet (no respitory infection) and vet thinks it was a birth defect or the use of mite spray could have parrelized it, so were now trying to get in touch with the breeder to find out if mite spray was used, and if not if we can exchange the python or refund.

Slap your mate around the head with a big stick. If he went through with the deal even after being told its only feed was assisted hes pretty stoopid. Other than that get the snake to the vet .

When she asked before she purcahsed it he said it was healthy, and eating great (she had to have it sent from NSW to QLD. So she purchased after being told everything with it was fine, paid top $$ and once she got it home, she asked what it was eating, and she was told it hadn't eaten on it's own, only assist fed (so no she wouldn't have purchased it fi it wasn't eating. And if you read above, it was taken to a vet .
Has anyone here hear of BHP's being able to regenerate a missing tongue if it's bit off or something like that. The reason I ask is that when my mate rang the guy she got it of today to tell him what the vet had said, he said that not to worry as BHP's can grow a new tongue
