snake under size

I have just taken over the care of a coastal carpet python that is around 3yrs old. He had barely been fed apparently in those 3yrs and from what I could see he had no heat source etc before I took him. I would say his is only around 2-3ft long and a girth of a mans thumb.
How should I proceed from here. Should I offer him food more often than normal and is it possible for him to reach a reasonably normal size with the right care.
I would really appreciate any help as I have never had to care for a snake that had been neglected before.

Thanx

Barely been fed as in neglected or barely fed as in he is a problem feeder?
Is he eating now?
Given a good heat source/gradient and maybe some quite time, hopefully it shouldn't be much of a problem getting him feeding (i would give him rats ).
Try feeding him weekly.
Hopefully he doesn't have any more probs
Poor little guy!!

You would want to ensure that he is metabolising properly before feeding him multiple mice. If it were me (and happy to be corrected) I would put him on fairly constant heat (careful not to over heat) for 2-3 days, then introduce a meal. I dont know I would give him more then one meal until he digest the first.

Any other views?

you do make a good point but we really need more infomation on the animals before any sort of real advice can be given. but your ideas wiould work well, he should digest properly with a heat source, its only a worry if his gut flora goes out of whack.

Give him a heat source and a thermal gradient. I would feed him once a week and make sure his movements look OK. If everything is OK, he'll grow really quickly. I've bought a few undersized snakes (I'm a sucker for a hard luck story) and all of them have thrived with warmth and food. Good luck and keep us informed.

Sorry guys I should have said he is more than happy to feed. He didnt feed because he wasnt offered it. He has had 2 large mice in the past week and seems to be digesting it fine.
I have put him under a light source and he is loving it. I will see if he will take a smaller rat and see how we go from there.
Thanx for the advise so far
