snakes on grass?

I touched on this subject in another thread but i have more questions about it so im starting a new thread instead of the normal hijack
Lots of ppl seem to commonly let their snakes roam around freely in their backyards, is this really a good thing to be doing?
Is it possible for a snake to get parasites from moving through areas where it may come into direct contact with reptile, frog and bird crap?
Is it possible for them to get mites doing this?
or is it safe if they dont eat anything?

I have let some of my snakes out in the yard but im cautious were i put them, usually dry areas with no vegitation is that ok?
feel free to ramble on in reply

RE: snakes on grass?

I haven't heard of peoples snakes catching anything from roaming the front or backyard. As fishbot said, I worry more about large birds flying overhead.

Yeah i never let them out of my hands when they are small enough for them or the butcher birds, even then i have to be real careful i had a small rat snatched from my hands before.

I've let a few of mine roam around and so far they haven't caught anything (touch wood). Large agro Scrubbies don't have to worry about birds, birds aren't an inconveniance, they're a food item. Come to think about it you can add cats, small dogs and the occasional lost child to that list

RE: snakes on grass?

I guess i should have mentioned my lawn is full of garden skinks and dwarf tree frogs and its not uncommon for a green tree snake to be cruzin around either and they are like a peak hour train for parasites. In winter it takes about 15-20 minutes to mow the lawn in summer it takes me about an hour waiting for all the little frogs to move

So would it be ok to let them cruize around in those conditions?

Hmm, don't think it would be such a good idea to let them snack while they're out there.

I take my crew out onto the grass. Some of them are toilet trained and refuse to evacuate their bowels in their enclosures.

My worst moment was when I took four diamonds outside, and somehow only three came back in again. To this day I don't know how I managed to forget Elka.

RE: snakes on grass?

If you are worried, see if you can find a nice big clean rock, and borrow it for a lil while. We have a retirement village around the corner and their whole enterance is lined with huge rocks. So we went in and asked if they would mind us letting our snakes have a bask sometimes, and suprisingly they said yes!!
Half of the oldies that pass by dont see them anyway, and the other half get my snake talk for free!!
I even had a few regulars who would come out to see the snakes when they saw we were there..
We're contemplating making a fake bask rock in the front yard as they really seem to enjoy it..

No! i still see more negatives than positives with letting them outside. I bought this topic up in a thread a little while ago. Why add to the chances of something going wrong?

africancichlidau- You crack me up
We also have some very misinformed neighbours that would probably call the three emergency services if i took mine outside.

Did you misunderstand them saying yes or did you just go ahead and do it anyway?
They really said yes!!! We dont stay for long tho, the rocks hold the heat so within 10-20min max they are toasty warm and ready to move to a cooler spot.
Have to admit we did it a couple times before asking, but it felt a little weird (and I didnt want to get approached by the manager or something) so we asked, thinking they would prob say no and we would have to build our fake rock out the front.. But there you go.. my snakes can win anyone over!!
