Hi guys, this is my first post as a new member. I am wanting to get a my wife a snake for her birthday (a long time wish) and would appreciate some help on starting her off. What is the best snake for handling? What size tank do i need? What type of accesseries do i need for the tank? any other insight would be welcomed.

We went for adult Antaresia as first snakes. They were (and still are) brilliant - calm, easy to care for and not too large. We have a stimson and a spotted. Both have handled well from the beginning, which was a major consideration in our choice. Getting an appropriate enclosure may set you back a bit. If you write to or ring Brian at HerpTrader, he is brilliant about helping you set up an appropriate enclosure at a reasonable price. He's always given us great advice about heating, etc.

I personally found it easier to find a breeder, first that way I knew how they were being housed and what they liked, second i have been able to call on her (even after hours). Then I went and got the things she recommended from the pet shop. Saved me heaps as the pet shop was trying to sell me heaps of extra stuff I didn't really need.

Scott, Find someone on this site in the "For Sale" section. Lots of reliable people here dude, you wont go wrong. Petshops are the worst place to obtain reptiles.... Over priced... Usually in poor condition, usually hybrids, and the staff usually dont know anything about reptiles to be able to give you advice....

I would try and get any reptile first from a breeder. But if you what to go to a pet shop I would suggest going to a reptile specializing pet shop as some normal pet shops don't have very good info on herps.and sometimes don't know what they're talking about. But you can save alot of cash by going around and finding the best price on lights etc.
