Temperature of Compact Fluros?

Hey Guys,

Just building new enclosures and wondering what temperature the ballasts of compact fluros get to? I want to know because I don't want any snakes burning themselves if they coil round the base of the light.

cheers

Jonny

Oh oh can I please steal ur post for 1 question....Do normal 40 or 60 watt party globes need heat cages? I don't want to risk burning and they get too hot for me to touch (snakes not in new enclosure yet).

Fanx!!

yeah if they are too hot to touch it will be too hot for your snake... and a compact fluro will need something over it aswell not because it gets to hot but because your snake may try and constrict around it for warmth breaking the bulb which could spell disaster for you and your reptile

I saw a baby coastal at my local pet shop wrapped round a 40 w globe every time I went in there, I do believe that snake is ok because it has been sold, on the other hand I was told to put cages round my globes no matter what, I guess it better to be safe than sorry IMO

Hey Jonny,
I will take a temp reading on one of the compact max globes, they are only 26watt's, so shouldn't get too hot.
Will check it and get back to you.

Cheers Neil

Hottest spot I could find on a CF was 113C, Hottest spot on a 40W incandescent was 160C.

Ok thanks guys- apprecitat it! IMO 113 and 160 degrees C is way too hot -enough to sizzle my skin at least. It's way above temperatures snakes would encounter in the wild.

If they come across temps of 160 in a bushfire, they aren't gonna survive.

Jonny,
Just checked the temp of one that has been running a couple of hours, a 26watt Compact max 5.0, and it's ballast temp was 53c.

Cheers Neil

What temp did you get for the globe itself Neil?
I found my normal CF globe was very hot to the touch (had been running about 4 hours), not instant burn stuff, but I could not kep my fingers on it for more than a second or two.

Interesting that the 26W compact max is so much cooler. Is it a UV globe?
I just rechecked my results with two diferent thermos as they are so diferent from Neil's.
Mirabella 18W edison screw CF lamp.
92C on the ballast, 78C on the globe, 112C in the spot in the centre of the base of the tubes.

Hi Mags,
I got 83C on the globe after 4 odd hours, and 55C on the ballast, I could easily keep my hand around the ballast without it becoming uncomfortable, so believe the Non contact gun I am using is accurate, although I will test it with another one, just to be sure. Yes it is a UV globe, they come in 5.0 and 10.0, but this test was on a 5.0.
Neil
