Just building new enclosures and wondering what temperature the ballasts of compact fluros get to? I want to know because I don't want any snakes burning themselves if they coil round the base of the light.
cheers

Jonny | Hey Jonny,
I will take a temp reading on one of the compact max globes, they are only 26watt's, so shouldn't get too hot.
Will check it and get back to you.

Just checked the temp of one that has been running a couple of hours, a 26watt Compact max 5.0, and it's ballast temp was 53c.

I found my normal CF globe was very hot to the touch (had been running about 4 hours), not instant burn stuff, but I could not kep my fingers on it for more than a second or two.

I just rechecked my results with two diferent thermos as they are so diferent from Neil's.
Mirabella 18W edison screw CF lamp.
92C on the ballast, 78C on the globe, 112C in the spot in the centre of the base of the tubes.

I got 83C on the globe after 4 odd hours, and 55C on the ballast, I could easily keep my hand around the ballast without it becoming uncomfortable, so believe the Non contact gun I am using is accurate, although I will test it with another one, just to be sure. Yes it is a UV globe, they come in 5.0 and 10.0, but this test was on a 5.0.
