Thermo probe question.... non-urgent but help asap please!

Im moving my stimsoni into a larger enclosure and I'm running a heat mat into a microclimate ministat 100 and newspaper substrate.

My question is... What can i do to keep the probe contacting with the newspaper where the heating is?

Its just sitting on top but im concerned the snake will move it off completely.

I don't want to use tape because i've heard horror stories before but i have no idea what else i can use thats safe.

blu tac?

masking tape? (because its less adhesive)

suggestions anyone? I'm hoping to put the snake in right away because everything is perfect with temps and all that its just this issue is the only thing stopping me putting in the snake.

Thanks!

Much better off positioning/fastening the probe on the back wall of the cage.About middle of the cage down near floor level is ideal..

Like Ramsayi said, mount it low on the back wall
and maybe use a couple small cable clips from the hardware?

the cable clips have a small nail going through them. Just slide the probe lead in and nail it to the enclosure. Oh - is it a timber or glass one - i should read your post again! If its glass you can get clips with a sticky back

Just my opinion but you really need to know the actual substrate temp as to not burn your stimmie.I suppose you could pre measure the sub temp then record the air(wall) temp and set in comparison. Maybe once a week you could check the sub temp just in case.
What about gluing 2 peice of wood together and putting on paper with sensor in it , wood could be 10cm long x2cm high joined making like a triangle once on the floor.

Hope this helps

Try taping the probe to the newspaper substrate over th heat pad with 2" masking tape running lengthwise along the probe. This will give the tape enough contact surface with the newspaper leaving no adhesive surface for the animal to get stuck on.
Mounting the probe to the back wall of the tank - definitely not with heat mat as the heat required from the heat mat to activate the probe/thermostat will be too great if the probe is not accurately positioned.

My bad.I didnt read the original thread properly, the bit about the heatmat. That being the case I would use a small piece of aluminium tape and fasten the probe directly to the mat.I would also position the mat outside of the tank.

I can't really have the mat outside of the tank as it throws the whole tank off balance, the mat is one of the green waterproof ones so it should be fine anyway.

Btw, i am going by surface temps, i have an IR temp gun that is measuring the heat of the floor surface so temps aren't a problem but getting the thermostat to have a consistent measure is

Best bet is, when the enclosure is made, machine (router) a slot in the floor from the back edge (assuming the rear wall end butts the floor when assembled) and inwards about 10 cm in length. Size the slot so the probe is in slight contact with the heatpad above it when it is slid into the slot from the back. I have photos of this if anyone is interested.
