Thermostat question

Hi all,

I have a 4 month old children's python and for heat I use a covered light plugged into a thermostat. My problem is, even though the thermostat has a dial with 40 degrees on it, even if I have it turned right up, the enclosure only ever reaches 29 degrees at it's hottest point.

I plugged the light directly into the powerpoint last night for a couple of hours, and the enclosure temp reached 32, but I wasn't game to leave it unattended all night, just in case the temp continued to rise and I reverted to plugging it back into the thermostat.

Is 29 degrees warm enough?

i would think that 29°C shouldn't be too bad it is coming into winter now so naturally temps will be a little lower than during summer....

Suggest using a heat mat or moving the light closer. What heats the enclosure when the light isnt on ?

The light is on continuously except when the thermostat kicks in and turns it off.

I have a thermostat, but it doesnt work and the temp is perfect, the warm end at the moment is about 32 degrees(right under the heat lamp) the middle is about 26-27 and the cool end is around 23-25. At the moment I dont need a thermostat, but 29 degree's should be fine. With you thermometre, make sure you have the probe in the middle, It was confusing me one time since I had it right under the Lamp and it was getting to 36 degree's. 32 Degree's is fine, he'll go somewhere cool in the enclosure if it gets to hot anyway, make sure the water bowl is big enough so he can get in it and soak and cool down if it gets to hot.

Here are some pics of the enclosure. I'm using a 100w Exo Terra Day Glo bulb.

personally i would swap the day glo bulb for a proper heat globe, while the day glo
dose give off heat its not really designed as a heat globe and as such dosnt give off enough heat.
In our 2 and 3 foot enclosures we run 2 60w heat globes and they are able to maintain heat levels at over 36dg .
And i do think that enclosure is a bit on the large side for a 4month childreni

I'm getting increasingly frustrated with my local pet shop because I think they've given me some dodgy advice. To start with they sold me a glass and metal tank and I've since read that wooden enclosures are best so I took that back and swapped it over for the one I have now. Then they sold me a heat rock which only got the enclosure to 22 degrees. I ended up taking that back for a refund also after I found out that they can fail and end up burning the snake.

I did have her in a small plastic tub for the first few days but I decided to put her straight into the larger enclosure after a few others told me that they choose to put their young snakes straight into larger enclosures. If I felt she was stresssed out in the bigger enclosure I would have put her back in the smaller one, but she seems fine. She's often outside of her hide and she and loves to sit out on the rock sunning herself under the light.

I'll drop into the store today and pick up a heat globe if they have one. I think she wanted to sell me one of those cause at first she was looking for a different type but they were out of stock so she sold me the one I have.

Use a heat mat, infrared, red, night or moon globe, these are all for night time.
Could you sleep with a light on all night???
Sounds like you have been getting the wrong advice.

That globe running all day and night will be stressing your snake out , imagine if you had to sit in a lit room all day and night ...
I would get a red heat globe as suggested ASAP ..
You may want to get a decent thermometer while your at it , that one is meant to be used in an aquarium and probably not the best option for a snake enclosure .
If you get a dual probe you can keep an eye on the hot end and cold end .

Your best bet may be to add a heat mat under 1/3 off that cage , a young childrens python is not going to get close to that heat as they will spend most of their time hiding on the floor under the hide or the paper ......
