Thermostats?

I am getting a carpet python, and i am very confused about whether i need a thermostat. In the cage iv put an old electric blanket on the low seting and hace a reflector bulb over a branch for the snake to sit in. Do I need a thermostat for this or can i regulate the temperature my self using the electric blanket setting?

Short answer: Always connect your heat source to a thermostat.

You don't want an electric blanket inside the enclosure, you'll burn the house down. Get a proper heat mat and thermostat.

Be careful with using electric blankets they are notorious for catching alight.

I don't know about using a thermostat on the light. The bulbs tend to blow prematurely when turned on and off all the time but definitely get a heatmat and use a thermostat with that.

How big is the python you're getting?

Try the herp shop there around $30 they are the on/off type but will do the job, but if you are using a tub might be an ideal to get a probe one which is about $70 from memory.

No just put the probe in and plug your lights in to the probe and off you go.

You could use a light if you really have to but heatcord if very much cheaper than a heatmat. I sell 15W (4m) heatcord in my shop for $26 so ask your local herp supplier about them. You could probably get away with no thermostat with the cord, still a good idea so you can control the temp. but you could layby a thermostat and get that later.
