Turtle Pond

I have two murrey shortnecks in a 2x3m pond outside and the water is looking a bit green.
I have put plants in there but now the weather is warming up they have had a field day and chewed through all the stems. They will grow back but it wont be until the weather cools down and they becaome less active.
I have also tried some weed on the top so that there was less surface area for the sun to hit but the turles thought that it was also tasty. Also they just left the root system and it now clogs the filter every day

Does anyone here have a pond with turtles and able to grow plants in.

I have also got shade mess over the pond to try and take the direct sunlight off it without taking all the sun away from it. Also it was a council requirement if I was to get a permit to keep topping it up due to stage 4 water restrictions all this year.

I would like to put something in that would grow quicker then the turtles would attach so if they do pick at it it will grow back so that there is always something in there.
I have tried a pond clear but it didn't do anything

Any help would be great

Also where would be the best place online to buy a pond filter with UV sterlilser from and what would you recommend I get.
The pond is about 2000lts

That may be my best bet of keeping it clear

Hey Ristof

I've got Water Lettuce (Pista Stratiotes Rosette) in my pond and the turtles don't touch it i think it might need warmish temps though not sure how it would go in Vic. I also have water lillies and whilst the yabbies decimated them the turtles seem to leave them alone...

Hi Ristof, I have a pond filter with 2 UV canister which i purchased late last year for sale. I have a 35000ltr pool that I converted but I am in the process of renovating for sale so the pond has to go and the pool restored. I bought mine brand new from World of Fish in Kenthurst (NSW). It was $1750, if you like we could discuss sales and Hobbo1972 on here freights to Vic. As for plants the little buggers ate all mine too, so I put shade cloth over the pond and just keep feeding them by hand, they love it, I did chuck feeder fish in once a month which they also love but i have noticed there are still a few in there and they are becoming quite large

I think it may be a bit big for my pond
My pond is only 2000lts max - it is 2mx3m with a gradiant of 35cm to 45cm at the deepend
The ones I was looking at where from here

restriction is on stage 4, you need to get a permit to do it
I tried to get a water carrier to fill it up but the council wouldn't even allow that.
Listen to this - the water carrier could only fill up pools, not ponds
I think it is stage 3 you can do it without a permit

Yeah I got one of those buckets, they are fantastic
They hold so much water and they aren't heavy

My turtles don't touch any kind of lily it seems, they are yellow faces. My pond is also in full sunlight. It did go green for a while but just out of the blue one day it went clear and stayed that way. If i were you i would just stop messing with it and let it sort out its self out, adding all the chemicals etc will keep messing with the equilibrium.

Also add some native feeder fish if you haven't already, the turtles will turn their attentionto them and leave the plants alone.

Problem is around here we don't have feeder fish
I could possibly get some small cold water fish

I will give that a try and see how it goes

No matter what I have put in there, lilly being one of them they eat them
Thanks for that I will let it go and see what happens
How long was yours green for before it went clear
Have you got a photo of your pond, would love to see it
