Turtle with cheesy mouth infection

I have an old long neck turtle who it seems is prone to infections. When outside in the ponds, she spends most of her time sleeping under an artificial rock/waterfall out of the water. Before winter she was checked by the vet and yellowy cheesy stuff was cleared from her mouth. I was advised to not let her hibernate and take her inside for the winter, so she has been in a heated 4' tank the last few months. Even inside, she prefers to sleep on the floating dock, even though the air temp may be 14 and the water 25. Only in the last few very cold nights have I seen her sleep in the warm water. Perhaps that is why I have also noticed a recurrence of the cheesy stuff coming out of her mouth? She's eating ok in the meantime.
What can I do? Would some Bactonex in the water help?
Thanks
Allan

I don't know alot about Turtles but white cheesy stuff in snakes is Mouth Cranker or Mouth Rot.
Did the vet say it was Cranker?in snakes it can lead to a Respiratory Infection very very quick.
I would get it back to a vet and in the meantime up the temp and feed the animal if it will eat.
Did the vet give the animal a shot of antibiotics and vitamin injection.

I would have given her a hot spot for basking in, with the air temps as low as 14 i would have thought she would go into hibernation again. Maybe give her a basking heat lamp/globe.

hey

yeah i think the best advice i can give would be get it to a vet and take a water sample with you. doesn't sound like hes feeling to well. chronic symptoms like that are hardly ever caused by just one thing id get the little guy checked out.

cheers Gary

Sounds like the little guy will need a course of antibiotics.
David Vella offers a 10% discount to AFTCRA Inc. members.
He is a great reptile vet and esp. turtle vet.

Visit Facebook Profile
maybe a radiant heat source would help that way the air temp wouldn't be so cold

There is a basking lamp that goes off with the UV light at 6pm....and of course other turtles in other tanks will spend the night in the warm water....but this one only in the last week.
BTW she's not that little, 18cm scl.
There was no antibiotics given last time, but I will contact David Vella.

If its canker it is a common bacterial infection in turtles. If its only mild you can clean the mouth with diluted betadine(20%)but advanced cases will need antibiotics.

The turtle was seen by David Vella today and it is a kind of canker, which he cleared out. The turtle is now on a course of antibiotics. As the turtle is fond of sleeping out of the water, there will be a heat lamp left on at night.
