turtles outside

we have put together an outside enclosure for the turtles (and we clicked after it was done for the lizards and snakes) but anyways.. They have a big tub of water to swm in and plenty of room for a wak around and a bask.. They will be out during the day for a good portion of the day while i am home from work (some days i dont start till 3:30 pm and the other days i get at home lunch time), they also get shade so they're not cooking in the sun.

So my question is if they are out side that often do they still need the uv light when they are in the tank or are they getting enough from the sun
here's some picks

I don't think they will need the UV no. But i would think they would need a much much largertub to swim in and no where near as much land if they are going to be spending a significant ammount of time outdoors. But good work for doing it, sunlight is heaps better than artificial UV imo.

thanks. Where they are now is only temporary, when we find a perminint spot in the yard to dig a hole they'll have a bigger pond to swim in

Great idea but i'd up the size of their swimming space quite a bit. I've been doing lots of research as i'm getting some turtles on friday and they spend most of their time in the water as compared to land.

the ground around it is pretty hard, how easy will they dig out ? the timber of frame is 70mm thick so it will need to be a long tunnel

Think you may need a bigger space for them to swim.
As they spend 90% of the time swimming and only 10% out basking.
Except in winter they like to hibernate on land, hope it is only temp.

is the cage 4 ft? if so, i would buy some pond liner, dig it into the ground and make 3 ft of water and 1 ft of land, and than just put the cage over the top.....

lol hey crush, this is what i wanted to do , but my missus (firedragon) said no holes as we rent but im sure it could be easily hidden during inspections as the snakes are !, instead i am building an above ground deck / pool for them this weekend

lol ok,
u could always get a pile of soil, or sand, and dig the pond in thier, so that thiers no hole on the ground, ,,
and if u reptiles 10 min of sunn aday , thats the same as a 12 hours of uv from a light tube ..
