<Humour>Microwave on high for 10 minutes. No need to cover it. </Humour>

But seriously, hot water from the tap. Put rodent in a freezer bag. Half fill a jug with hot tap water and immerse the rodent completely.

The thin bag will keep the rodent dry thus allowing the available scent to remain.

TIP: Don't use Mum's good crystal jug.

straight into hot water, served warm and wet, unless on a "swallowable" substraat then i dry it off to avoid the substraat sticking to the food item

I wouldn't microwave the food item. It can get hot spots, start to cook the item and/or encorouge bacteria to grow.
