I've just finished giving Herman (spotted python) a bath to help him shed, as he always seems to have trouble with shedding...Anyway, while I was holding him I noticed some small brownish marks on his belly. They aren't perfect spots, but little marks at the edges of a few scales. There's not alot of them, maybe across 3 scales then on a couple further back. They don't cover the whole scale, only on the ends. Any ideas???

hi there i was just wondering if anyone could tell me if this is normal.
my 3yr old spotted python had his first winter cooling this year. and hasnt eated in about 3 mnths and now he has perked right up again and is cruising his tank however. he still isnt eating... i have offered him a food item once a month since he started to wake up so not to waste expensive rats when he isnt eating them... is this normal not to eat for so long or should i be considering a vet visit. he has never had a cooling before and this one was not by my choosing it just so ohappened we moved during winter and the new place is lots colder than the old one and b4 we could up the temps with a different globe he was snoozing...

any info is good

cheers

at this time i find myself wondering what the hell has happened.... 2 seperate incidents that have resulted with sick or dead snakes...

at this time i find myself wondering what the hell has happened.... 2 seperate incidents that have resulted with sick or dead snakes...

1st issue happened about 5 months ago my son got to the cage and opened the door to the enclosure of my jungle pythons....the female escaped and couldnt be found ...5 months later we find her frozen next to the car in the frost outside...she had turned yellow to white, and was as solid as a rock.. i thought for sure she was dead, until i saw her tongue... we quickly bathed her in luke warm water for approx 20 mins and that got her goin a little, we then isolated her off in the box from the heat lite with a cloth and a heat pad to warm her up slowly..... this was all about 2 weeks ago and she is still goin but wont eat and isnt looking the best ive asked a few friends but they said there is not alot more you can do, im j ust wondering if there is??

the other problem i had was with my cape yorks... about 3 weeks ago i went away for 7 days i fed them before i left everything was fine...after being home for 2 days i went to vlean the box and feed them again...but i found on the floor of the enclosure a half digested rat on the floor, i thought this aint right and when i looked for the snakes i found the male inside his rock looking rather docile ( he is usually quite aggressive when putting your hand into the box, once out he is like a little kitten) but what disturbed me the most was the female was dead behind the rock....after that the male seemed to be rather distant and died 2 days later no warning whatsoever.... the enclosure temperature hasnt changed but it has been very cold the last couple months getting to below 5 degrees im not sure if this couldve been the cause or not, but my friend who breeds snakkes says he has lost 7 this year to the cold....

anyway if anyone has any ideas id love to hear them
thanks

A couple of months ago I noticed a medium sized EWD in my back yard sitting there with its mouth open and something hanging out. At first I thought it was regurgitating but when I looked closer I noticed it appeared very mucusy (spelling?). I managed to catch it and get to a reptile vet who also took wildlife and they found it to be fairly nasty bacterial infection. It was released to a carer but I'm not sure what happened after that. Then today I dropped home on a lunch break and found a much larger EWD showing the exact same symptoms. Unfortunately he managed to evade me, but I'll continue to keep an eye out for him cause it really didn't look good. I'm just wondering if anyone else around Brissie, in particular around Mt Cootha has noticed anything like this?

I just need help. My python got out last night, it was my fault as i overlooked the 4mm gap in between the glass. i totally forgot she could get out. i have a heat mat and a hide ontop of that under my bed, and a strong heater in the end of the house she could be so she doesn't get too cold and die. there is no way she could get outside, the cats haven't got her because there would be blood, they dont eat things, they just kill them, so none have got her. i have the house all shut off from where the cats can get her, its all carpet, so would i be able to put talc powder down?
please help. i do realise its entierly my fault and i feel very guilty and shamefull because i was responsible for that life, now i dont even know where she is.

Hi guys,
I got up this morning and did the usual switch on of the light in my beardie's tank and left him while i went about my business. But when i came back about 5mins later it looked like he had fallen off the log he was sleeping on which is approximately 28cm from the ground and was on his back shaking. The shaking lasted about 30 seconds from when i entered the room. During this time i flipped him gently half onto his front but couldnt all the way due to him being pressed against the wall of the tank and i didn't want to apply too much force.
After a bit the shaking slowed down to a minor little head shake and he straightened his body out and i patted him on the tail encouraging him to move and he ran from the end he was currently on(the cool end) to the basking end but he was moving a little odd. Sort of running along with his arms and legs fanned out, i imagine just because he was still recovering from whatever just happened.
Now, this could be a few things. He may have fallen off the log and landed on his back while he was still waking up and went into shock.
He was too cold, i must say the cool end in winter hangs around 18-24 degrees celcius and the hot end stays around 37-40.
I'm on Kitty's Crumble substrate which is a coconut fibre based substrate which i have researched and it appears to be ok. One person on here said they used it with their blueys for a few years and still are.
It would be odd for him to have impaction because i rarely feed him crickets on the floor of the tank for this reason plus, it's coconut fibre which isnt very strong but too much of it would clog him up. Regardless though, he taught himself a way to get the crickets without touching the substrate, sort of a delicate procedure of a quick precision strike at the target. He only occasionally gets a bit in his mouth like yesterday when i hand fed him and threw a cricket in with him just to see if he was hungry and then after the first one i just fed it by hand. But he never gets too much in his mouth and i usually feed him in a plastic container filled with crickets inside the tank to avoid this.

I havn't been using calcium powder on the crickets as often within the past month but i imagine that you can't get a calcium defficiency within a month of slowing down the amount you give him. I guess i did it out of laziness, found it easier to just chuck some crickets in a container without putting them in a plastic bag with powder, shaking it, then getting powder all over my fingers and getting them out.

Im gonna keep an eye on it today and see if he wants to eat later. I'll mist him with some water because i remembered i havn't done that in a while and see how it goes.

What do you guys reckon?

I'm new to all this and I'm not sure how many watts I'd need to reach 31-33 for blonde spotted? Many of you have recommended I use a ceramic heat globe which is what I will be doing and it already has a ceramic light holder.

Would a black ceramic heat emitter do the job 24/7 with a thermostat?
Thanks for all your help and here's a picture of my enclosure. It has a red heat globe in it but it only heats up to 20 degrees.

Hi all

After some advice about my Port Mac

I have a small collection of snakes recently moved (6 weeks) from Brisbane to Gosford. My Bredli, MD, Coastal and BHP have all adjusted well and are eating weekly (all between 6-18 months of age).

My Port Mac (just over 15 months age) however has refused his last 4 feeds (small rats). He did eat the first 2 offerings at his new location. He looks healthy, moves plenty, drinks and is very inquisitive and good to handle. It's been about 9 weeks since his last shed, a little longer than usual. I have also recently upgraded his tub size. His tub is over heat at one end, the same as all the others.

Should I be worried about his lack of interest in food? Will this be detrimental to him/her in the longer term? Or could the cooler conditions simply have triggered a reduced interest in food? He pretty strongly resembles his Diamond dad - would the diamond traits be stronger therefore and account for any of this?

Just a little concerned given the others have all adjusted so readily

Any advice appreciated!!!

Cheers

Hi everyone.

Hi everyone.
im pulling my hair out at the moment feeling like im not doing very well by my lovely little boy oscar. hes a coastal carpet python, about 2 and a half years old.
lately, everywhere i turn im getting different advice and its totally shifted my confidence on how i am supposed to look after him.
Ive had oscar since sept 2008 and have always (until now) thought i was doing pretty well by him.
I moved from far north queensland last year to vic, and then recently to melbourne, and am trying to make the weather change as smooth as possible for him.
ok soo a few things..

food:
He gets fed a rat a little bigger than his widest diameter once a week, and once every 2nd week in winter. is that ok?
I have only just stopped breeding rats as its doing my head in a little with guilt and same as i just said, all of a sudden certain people have made me feel like im not doing it right.
(with rats, what is the CORRECT and most humane way to off them for your snake as i will not feed live!!! i thought i was doing it right but am now not so sure..)
i feed him in a big deep box, so that he doesnt associate his cage with food. so far so good, is this an issue?

size:
ok so im not sure how big he should be by now. how much does enclosure size affect the growth rate of your snake?
as a 2 and a half year old coastal carpet python, he is about 6 foot 4 (i know cause he is my boyfriends height) but is still quite thin for what i assume a 2 year old python should be?
how old is a snake when it is fully grown?
his head is a little smaller than the size of a 50c piece (if that makes sense.. i dont know how to explain it) and his thickness is about 8-10 cm in diameter??
is that ok or is he small for his age?

scale lift:
Oscars belly scales lift a little. they flick if he moves the wrong way and it stretches all down his body.
a guy told me its cause of how i look after him and its some horrible condition called 'scale lift' which is completely caused by my lack of nurture. he said that it will only stop if i feed him once a month instead of once a week.
is once a month too little cause it seems awful to me and its the first ive heard of anything called 'scale lift' or of it being ok to feed that rarely. i tried looking the condition up and couldnt find anything.
he also said it can kill him..
is it my fault and can i fix it?

heating & lights/moving:
because i have just moved to the coldcold im freaking out that oscar isnt in hibernation.
i dont know how to put a snake into hibernation and i dont really want to find out through trial and error.
is it bad for him to be kept awake? it is very cold at the moment would he benefit from being put into hibernation next winter and if yes whats the best way?
at the moment he has a heat mat, a heat rock, a 250W ceramic heat emitter and has a 5.0 reptiglow uvb light to try and mimic his natural tropical forest environment.
what is ideal for a coastal carpet python?

housing/new cage:
im mid way through builing oscar a new cage so he can climb. he is a very aerial boy so ive been building a 2m tall cage so that he can climb to his hearts desire.
the reason i have so much heating is beacuse of the size of the cage and the awful weather in melbourne.
there are seperate hot and cold spots through the cage, up the top is the basking area and he has a warm spot down the bottom.
the cage has no humidifier. is there an alternative to providing humidity, as the cage is wood and the sides of the cage are louvered/flyscreen so there is heaps of fresh air and i dont think the humidity would stay in. how do humidifiers work? can you go without?
can you reccommend a good way to keep the heat in aswell?
is a wooden cage ok? any advice on correct housing would be great.

stress/handling:
my boy is normally the most chilled out animal i can ever imagine. he is clever, cheeky, inquisitive and social, but so docile and maliable that i would assume he was a plastic snake toy if he didnt come up and smooch you.
i handle him quite alot, every day if i can, but realistically every 2nd day for 15-20 mins unless he has eaten.
i leave him for 48 hours after he eats and keep it mimimal for the next 24 after that.
when the suns out he will cruise around outside for maybe a extra 30 mins when hes out, so conveniently he poos on the grass.
before now, he has never not eaten and never regurgitated anything.
when i first moved, he didnt eat for 4 or 5 weeks which freaked me out good and proper, but i blamed the change of weather as it was mid winter last year.
i got him eating again by giving him live pinkies (the mother rat escaped and i didnt know what to do with them)
since then, no troubles. he has had every feed offered.
a few days ago, he regurgitated for the first time ever.
im really worried. im guessing it was because the dogs were thundering up and down the halls that day and he got worried.
the temporary enclosure he is in now is on the floor and i think the vibrations carry quite alot. ill be finished his new cage in a week or so.. i cant put it up anywhere at the moment.
once his new enclosure is finished he will be able to climb so hopefully this wont be an issue??
any suggestions?
also this morning i woke up and he is sitting funny. it was not last night, but the night before that he regurgitated.
he is now sitting with his front half under his hide rock in the warm spot and his bum end out on top of the hide rock under the UV.
normally he is a very in or out kinda snake. never half way. i tickled him this morning and he reacted but didnt move.
ive been out for 4 hours or so and hes still in the same spot. i tickled him again and the same reaction.
normally if i tickle him he will move and go under his hide rock, or come out and say hello.
i dont want to move him incase hes really sick..
what do i do.
what are signs of excessive stress or sickness in snakes?

please help. sorry for so many questions.
people have been questioning my way of caring for him in the last few weeks and all of a sudden im not so sure.
I just want my boy to be happy.
Thanks xx

Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone out there can give me some advice. I have a 12 year old Darwin Coastal Python and I'm a little concerned.

When he was last fed, he starting the glass quite viciously. He did this about 8 or 9 times. He has always been quite placid but now my children have become frightened. I must admit we haven't been taking him out of his cage that much. Do you think this is why he is acting this way?? Any advice appreciated.

Yes it's another "bad shed" thread! :)

My Woma recently got rid of the old skin, but there is what looks to be 1 eye shield scale left, I only just noticed and it's been over a week since the shed.

I searched the board and tried the warm moist hand towel method last night, but I couldn't get it off. I was scared of damaging the eye so I gave it a rest after a good few goes.

I will try again tonight but I am wondering, what are the consequences of not removing it?
