Thanks for everyones suggestions. I'm off to bed - I now have to think of a good way to break it to the family in the morning. I will follow up on the correct thermometre and thermastat.

They were about 40 cms when we got them. They have grown since we got them as they were initially shorter than the glass doors to their cage however are now about 60/70 cms.

36.8 was taken with the medical thermometre directly against the surface of the heat mat. Sorry I do not have anything else to measure temps with.
