You could always get one of those humane rodent traps. I believe the rat gets in then can't escape so you could just let it go somewhere i guess.

If the '95%' stat did in fact come from a study I would assume it would come from a suitably sized sample of snake bite patients. But then again you never know....

I would just run it on hot days and turn it off at night. If it gets too cool then the heating in your enclosures will just have to work a bit harder.
