Paint for melamine

Hey guys i just got 2, 5x2x2 cages and im wanting to paint them black just wondering what paint is best and is it possible to paint melamine? or doesnt it stick let me know if you have ever painted melamine before.

I've heard you need to either sand it and/or put primer before you can get paint to stick to it

yea i was thinking about a primer but didnt think of sanding thanks
