The Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water (DECCW) is offering a number of reptiles for disposal through a ballot. The following species have been identified for the Department and are advertised as:

4 - Yellow-faced Whipsnake (Demansia psammophis)
1 - Marsh Snake (Hemiaspis signata)
3 - Eastern Stone Gecko (Diplodactylus vittatus)

Every effort has been made to correctly identify these animals. The Department cannot guarantee the identification of an animal offered though the ballot system.

These animals have been seized during recent law enforcement investigations. Some of these animals may have been caught in the wild and their original capture locations are unknown. The return of these animals to the wild is not a responsible conservation option.

The Department recommends that a veterinarian checks all animals received through the ballot system and a reptile hygiene protocol be followed.

If you wish to be included in the ballot you must register your interest by 2.00 PM Wednesday 18th November 2009. Registrations received after this time will not be accepted. You can register your interest by either a faxed message to 02 9585 6401 or an emailed message to [email protected]

Phone inquiries will not be accepted.

Your registration must include the following:

1. the words DECCW BALLOT in the title of your fax or email
2. your full name
3. your address
4. a prioritised list of the animals you would like to register for
5. your current NSW Animal Keepers’ Licence number authorising the possession of the animals you have registered for
6. your contact number between 2.45PM and 3:15PM on Wednesday 18th November 2009
7. NOTE: only one individual animal per licensee can be provided

Any registrations that do not include all of the above will be excluded from the ballot. Licences will be checked before the ballot. Expired licences or licensees whose fauna record books we have not received for 2009 will also be excluded from the ballot.

NB: If you are successful in the ballot you must be available to collect the animal from the Department’s Hurstville office between 2.30PM and 3.30PM on Thursday 19th November 2009. If you intend to have someone collect the animals from our office on your behalf they must have permission from you IN WRITING. Verbal permission will not be accepted.

If you are successful:

1. you will be notified by phone between 2.45PM and 3.15PM on Wednesday 18th November 2009;
2. you must collect the animal from the Department’s Hurstville office between 2.30PM and 3.30PM on Thursday 19th November 2009. If you are unable to collect your animal during this time it will be forfeited to the next available person; and
3. the animal will be pre-bagged but you must bring a hard-shelled lockable container to transport your animal.

bumping so more people get a chance to see it (I'm on to you lot)

so to make this clear, I received my license April 2009 and therefore haven't sent my books in for 2009. So I can't register... no fair.

They are reffering to the return of recordbooks in april, and if you got your licence after then it doesnt apply to you.

So has anybody worked out that at least 2 of those species were recently advertised on a number of forums by someone in Sydney? Even the numbers of animals are the same.

You see,DECC is here,Decc is there,Decc is everwhere, they never escape!

i wonder if those stones are jeweled gex?you never know with DECC

The whip snakes and marsh snake sound interesting but I dont think I'd know how to look after them and dont really have the time to learn lol. Are they much different from pythons in terms of husbandry. I'd probably concerned that they arent feeding on mice/rats, but rather on skinks.

I'm thinking the whips will be Diamond Pythons

LOL smartypance, but i think youll find that they dont employ DECCs anymore on their wildlife skills, most these days are climate change specialists like the weather forcasters at channel nine, cant ask such stars to identify geckos,Hurstville is like Hollywood these days :)

I can pretty much guarantee they would only be feeding on skinks atm.... they may be class 1, but not for begginers. But if you can get the whippy eating skinks which can be done, then you end up with a awesome snake to keep. If they have been wild caught (very likely) then it just depends whether their pasasite load eats them before you can convince them to eat a pinky... Marshies are much harder to get to eat unscented pinkies, though will take small fish.

Fair enough. Yeah dont think I'm gonna try for them. I dont think I can put myself thru the trauma of catching and killing and then freezing skinks lol. I figured they would probably be wild caught and would be crawling with parasites. The thing with these ballots is that you may be getting the animal for free but who knows what else your getting with the animal. Are you going to try your luck with them?

No, I already have Marsh snakes and YFW live in numbers around my area, I see them in the garden from time to time and see no need to keep them myself... I'm really not looking on expanding my collection anyway, I just got it down to a good size.

what id find interesting i was reading a write up on burkes backyard on how marsh snakes can sometimes be confused with eastern brown snakes an going on deccs history it would be interesting with a person with no experience or little end up with one of those
