if you live out in the country and your property isnt fenced off and you find your dingo starts going hunting for wildlife and IF there are people living not to far from you, you may find that they will most likely make complaints and your dingo will have to go. Thats if that sort of scenario fits your situation.

Best dog i ever had was a dingo x bull terrier..He used to dig huge holes and could only yodel, not bark but i had him for ten years and i went to pieces when he chased a cat under a truck.

i used to shoot alot of them in my last job but they were all wild ones. the captive bred ones that i have had anything to to with have all been great pets and great with kids...............
as far as i am concerned all dogs are good it all depends on how u treat them and what they are tought...........
i have 2 pure bred jack russels and u can teach them anything as is the same for most dogs.. if u want one then go for it as long as u are prepared to educate it propperly

A dingo is just a dog. Some will be very wild some wont be. Some will have a high prey drive others wont. A good breeder can breed the "wildness" out of them and what your left with is......a dog! All dogs are trainable IF you put in the time and socialise them propley. I have heard that you need to get them younger that you would do with a domestic dog, 5-6 weeks instead of 8-9.

If your not really into dogs then why get one? A dog (dingo,shepard whatever) is a life time commitment (theirs) not just a whim. It sounds like you want one just for the "Coolness" factor, to show off to your mates, not because you have an interested in the breed.

If your on a farm better check with the neighbours. If they have livestock i don't think you'll be all that popular.

That last paragraph is true. It is a life long commitment and getting one on a farm... Are you going to get 6ft fences+ and concrete the bottom all around?

i've worked with dogs for nearly 15 yrs and the experiences i've had with Dingos have been great. I also had a dingo X red heeler when i was growing up and he was an awesome dog, best guard dog ever but could escape from anything.
Theyre highly intelligent dogs, almost too smart.
I do agree though that they're not the kinda dog that would make a good "pet".
I've never heard of the wildness being bred out of them, it is just natural instinct that comes with that breed. Eg: a foxy will always be a good mouser because it is in the breed, or a kelpie will always show an intrest in livestock.
Keep researching the breed, or get one that is crossed with a dingo ( not for some, i know) but if your not a dog person then just stick to your herps.

DO NOT get a cross breed.

NO reputable dog breeders will agree with that. NO reputable dingo breeder will breed the 'wild' out as breeding is for the betterment of the breed - not to make it easier to own!

Seriously, think about the animals welfare and about the lifelong commitment. A dingo is a wild animal, should be treated with respect and CORRECTLY and not just kept as a 'pet'. They're not the usual run-of-the mill 'pet' to keep and you shouldnt just suddenly find out that its legal to get a dingo where you live and then rush out and buy one. Especially if your NOT a dog person, what is the point in that? as someone else said, for the 'cool' factor? Its not fair on the dog. The majority of the people who own dingoes, in my opinion, shouldnt have them.

It's not important but I thought I'd through it out there as someone might be interested to know that dingo's actually aren't a dog. It's related to the wolf family.

It's fairly closely related to dogs though - they both come from the exact same family - canidae.

They are both thought to have descended from the Grey Wolf so both are very much related. THe way I understand it is the dog is the domesticated version, we manipulated the breeding where Dingos were a 'survival of the fittest' type thing.

I could be wrong though about that last paragraph.

dingo's actually aren't a dog.

They are actually a dog..just a different breed of dog..Like a basenji or any of the husky / spitz type dogs,they are old ancient breeds, different but still the same animal.
What is a wolf if its not a dog?

The Domestic dog is a subspecies of Wolf, Canis lupus familiaris, dingoes are also a subspecies of wolf Canis lupus dingo. Therefore a dog and a dingo are both wolves and a wolf is not a dog.

As far as I'm aware the dingo was origionally before it was made australian a asian wolf but this is going back some time so it's now classed as a australian speicies. As for weither you should own a dingo or not I'm not going to say as I don't know your situation personally so not going to jump to conclusions. All I can say is that I have been around dingo's growing up as a child and from what I could tell, they are not to be compaired to your average dog. A dingo in general has almost a split personality great one day horrid the next. Although they can be some what trained you never can trust them 100% even being there owner. As for with kids well if you have kids I honestly wouldn't get one. There not the sort of dog that likes to spend there time with humans all day long either, they much rather go off and do there own thing (which is usually something they shouldn't be doing).

One of the dingo's that my grandmother had was horrid in the sense you couldn't go to her house without it running out to the car and snarling at you (mind u it did it to her as well when she got home). Also most cross breeds that have dingo in them are crazy dogs (simular to a kelpie) without the right sort of training and excersise they just go nuts. If you really want a dingo and after doing a lot of reasurch think it would be a great part of your family then by all means but I strongly suggest specially if your not a dog person considering something else.

If dingos become more popular then breeders will start to breed them to be more "user friendly". Its not hard to do. The Russians did it with their blue foxes over a few generations. The same can be done with the dingo. It just takes some effort and the right breeding stock.

But i know there is a big breeder in mackay qld.
Even his femle dog bit him on the head once.. Left a nasty set of teeth marks.
