I'm looking for my first snake - have been recommended to get a Stimson Python, but interested in anything suitable for a beginner that anyone in WA has for sale? Preferably young though.

*Edit* Ok, for some reason it says my state is ACT... it isn't ;)

I think a stimsons would be your best bet as you cant keep childreni or spotted pythons over there. Stimsons have a great temprement and only grow to a max 1 metre. They are a really nice snake and very pretty (in my opinion)

Not to sound like I'm jumping on the bandwagon - but I too think you should get a Stimmie - they are a great snake, but more importantly, you guys have the best looking Stimmies in the country over there! ;)

Hehe yeah, that seems to be most people's opinion that I've talked to - thanks guys.

So does anyone in WA have any for sale??

hey mate,

yeah go with a stimmie, you can get some really nice ones over
where you are. Try west aussie reptiles or reptile trader.

hi,stimmies are the best for your first snake,i have four and they are beautiful,so gentle.
Try reptiletrader 08-95272245.Once you get one you will be bitten with the love bug for reptiles
and want more.:);)

:DHi I have got both, My first was a hatchling, and my other three were adults. Its what you feel comfortable with little or just a big bigger. My adults were wild caught and they are all plascid.
Make sure you get enough information about them and have your enclosure ready first before you buy one and bring it home.Reptiletrader knows of some-one who holds python keeping course so look into that and it will give you heaps of information teaching on them.
Hope this helps you.

Thanks for the helpful reply :)

So is the snake less likely to want to bite me all the time if I have it from when it's a hatchling, or you dont think it will make much difference?

I used too work with hatchlings and they are so cute never got bitten and on the other hand i worked with wild caught one too and yes some of them were bitey was bitten heaps but that was part of the job, which i loved very much.So all in all i would go for a hatchling first if you are a bit frighten of been bitten.
Just go and see Ken in what he has and pilbara pthyons they are good as well. Feel free to pm me i live close to you and you can come and check out my enclosures and reps.:)
I would of like to go to armadale today but have to go to hospital and visit my new grandson,Hopefully they will have another one so i can go to that one.:(

Yeah I didn't end up going to armadale either, I can still hardly talk from the flue :( I'll be at the next one for sure.

I'm not really afraid of being bitten, cos I know it will happen at some point no matter what (I see myself with quite a few snakes in the future :p). But good idea, I'll see whats around. Thanks :)

beware of paying top dollars for a python keeping course. run by people who have only a couple years experience themselves.
A good herp dealer should be able to give you all the advice for free with your snake.
Although advice from a petshop will only lead you to spend more money in their shop.
I have stimsons available if your interested and you can see me at the "west australian reptile" park in the swan valley.

Raiiyne - The best person to speak to in WA is Westaussie......be wary of retail outlets. www.westaussiereptiles.com.au

Don't waste money on a keeping course, save that money and put it towards you're next snake purchase. As westaussie said, a good dealer won't charge you extra for keeping advice.

Hey Raiiyne,
My name is Karen and i run the Python Keeping course in Rockingham.
It is entirely up to you if you feel you would like to do the course.
To let you know that for me to run the course i had to adhere to strict guidelines and have the necessary experience and know how for the license to be issued.
The DEC has now given me recognition as being competant in the training of Dangerous reptiles(Cat 5 non venomous),
Also it is the only Python Keeping course in WA, that covers all aspects of husbandry and handling etc.
The DEC dont just hand out licenses and for your information i have my Dealers license, Farmers license, Reg 16 and Reg 4/15 licenses. I have successfully bred Stimsons pythons, SW Carpets, Womas, and many species of lizards and it seems to me that the above information is just to promote their own ends, not encourage you to make sure that you give your python the best possible home and care you can.
Make up your own mind and pop in to see Ken at the Reptile Trader, where he will provide you with information free of charge and being the only Reptile specialist shop in Perth will be only to glad to help you find the stimmie of your choice.
BTW he has a sale on tomorrow 20% off everything in store including the reptiles.

Good luck with finding your stimmie.

Check out the Reptile Trader in Rockingham tomorrow he is having a HUGE STOCKTAKE sale and his advice is free!!!! Doors

Stocktake sale. As in reptiles on sale. Are all the reptiles being sold or just the stock on special.

I dont understand, isnt all advice free.
