Hi,
Why keep venomous snakes?
Simple, because I love all snakes!
I have been keeping and handling venomous snake as a professional and private keeper for over 25 years and in that time, I have never had to use tongs on wild caught or captive animals.
I also agree that you have to start young. You have to learn how to judge it's body language, they are all individuals and I have and have had taipans, eastern browns and rough-scaled snakes that could be handled like a blindsnake and others that are just the opposite, trying to bite as soon as you open the cage.
But if you are scared of them , It's simple, keep away from them.

In regards to the Australian Venom Zoo. We have had only five reptiles die in three years.
There were a few teething problems in the beginning...
All of the animals are vet inspected on arrival and monthly thereafter. Andrew our vet. is provided with faecal samples regulary. We have recently hire new staff who are reptile specialists and have extensive experience with venomous animals. Big plans are in the pipeline. As mentioned there were some early problems, but we are on track. Next time your up in Kuranda, drop in and I 'll give you a look behind the scenes.I think you find things a bit different.

Seems lady :p is frustrated and blowing off steam, this was a good read!

Punji, i so think of you when i see that ad where the guys next to his 4wd and says " get in boris ''

Oh and i dont think id ever be allowed to keep vens, im too clumsy ;)

What a crap thread.
I'd reckon the macho/cool thing is a very small percentage & that most keepers of elapids do so
because they're into 'em , interested & fascinated just like folks who keep pythons or fish or parrots.

i think everyone is missing the point.
its the people who are keeping elapids for the wrong reasons and not caring for them properly that ladys having a go at, with scarcasm people ;)

Who's "Everyone" & what exactly is the "Point" . It's just babble & not even clever sarcasm either.

note the 'rolleyes' next to each statement and the crying icon next to 'break bones'

Followed by the OBVIOUS way its supposed to be done as the alternatives!

Then people got hot headded, taking it literally when its quite clear they are made in jest

oh and the point, that hes sick of seeing people keeping these for the wrong reasons and mis treating them and is blowing off steam ;)

he 'really' means ?

I was being sarcastic but forgot to add the little rolling eyes thing , so you probably missed it.
I didn't think he chose you as spokesperson , I saw it as a self elected thing on your part.
Anyway , my original point was that it was a crap thread started on an antagonistic note to people that choose to keep Elapids . Re-read the 1st post again & see for yourself.
Happy new year.

hehehehe i like u natrix, thanks for entertaining me, this has been fun.

of course it was started on an 'antagonistic note' and guess what, you took the bait.......

have fun :)

Yea , that was fun in a ---new-years-eve-intoxicants-finally-wearing-off-kinda way :)

& Jeda , what's a poonana person ?

Haha he keeps elapids himself, he's not having a go at EVERYONE who keeps them. only the few that do it to be cool. I got it! The fact there is anyone out there who fits into the machismo thing is sad... and from his post a few after his original he points out he's been talking to a few like that. It would make me pretty mad too!

shhh clairebear, you become a self appointed bodyguard if u try to explain

I keep about 15 vens from feircies to RBBs. All (bar 1) are as tame as a show python. I only handle them on average once a week when I clean their cage.
I do admit to being bitten once by a pet elapid and once by a wild one (both were in the same week). I really felt terrible for troubling all the medical staff over something that could have been easily avoided, It was definatly a huge lesson learnt.

Eladidare - If your asking why people keep vens as pets?. My answer would be I just got bored with keeping pythons, lizzards and wanted to learn more about other herps. and elapids were i suppose next in line. Elapids are very fasinating creatures once you start learning about them.

Dee

BTW- Ill have some baby inland taipans due in march, if anyone is interested.

Eladidaire: Thanks for your PM
Becs : Hope you have a good pregnancy & a beautiful healthy bub
