I have used Paypal for ebay transactions etc, and never had any problems, I suspect this is more just a marketing ploy to get more people to use the service. The link does actually send you to a paypal site as far as I could tell.

I doubt you really get $20 for doing it though, I bet theres a catch somewhere.

You may have changed the text to read (my email address) but you haven't changed the actual link mate :) so your email address is still visible

haha meh don't really care its an old email i don't really use anymore anyway

Okay, a little lesson for you all.

Click the link in your email BUT DON'T LOGIN!

See where it goes in the Adress bar at the top.

Wiht HTML in emails you can change the Anchor text of a link.

See I can make it look like paypal:

https://www.paypal.com/ch/links/uni/em/secure$.php

But it actually goes to my website.

Look in the address bar, if it's PayPAl it's real, if it's something else it's a scam.

I pulled up a legitimate pay pal page and it looks differen t to the one that Coxy posted....

It is impossible to have two pages with the exact same domain name.

impossible, there can't be more than one PayPal.com like there can't be more than one APS.

They can hide the name by changing the HTML code of the link, but they can't hide it in the address bar.

I am sure the link sent to him was a scam, but the actual text of the link which he copied (the mask) is a legitimate PayPal page.

And another way you can tell that it's the real PayPal is by the https:// not http:// https means it is a secure website, you can also tell it's secure by th address bar being yellow.

The link sent to Coxy probably was a scam, but the mask which he posted here isn't.

Coxy, go to the email and right click on the link and click "Copy link location" and post that here.

Edit.

Also the reson it looks different is because that is PayPal for china.

Some look different:

www.paypal.com/ch = China

www.paypal.com/us = United States

www.paypal.com/au = Australia

https://www.paypal.com/ch/links/uni/[email protected] (remove the "/ch" for english)

Thing is im pretty sure i have a paypal account in that email address from years ago, i don't even know why the email is still open i left optusnet about 2 years ago but still receive emails sent to that address so i havn't deleted it from the email client. I'm not going to risk it, usually i can spot the scam in these things, but this one seems well done if it isn't legit.

Well i logged into my paypal account for the first time in a couple of years. But unlike those people in the ebay forums no $20 hmm

Ok well, i thougnt while im on the paypal site i'd update some info, email address etc, anyway while i was doing this noticed in recent activity .
Payment From eBay International AG $20.00 AUD 27 Jan. 2008 Completed

With an accept decline button, well i accepted and now $20 in the account, and i didn't go through the email link to do it. so if you havn't used your paypal account for a while logon and there might be $20 in there now what to do with it :) .

Just had a thought, while this seems legit now, i think it will encourage phishing emails using the same info, and people will research it, see its real and click the fake link.
