What is the best small freshwater fish to keep with a shortnecked turtle. Ones that they can feed on when they want

I'd say guppies, you could buy a small tank and put 1 female and around 2-3 females and then let them breed and soon after about 4 weeks you get little babies and turtles can eat the babies, so that you don't always have to go the shops and buy then and when you don't want them to breed anymore just seperrate he male and the females.

Note: Guppies breed like RABBITS!

guppies would be the best as they are tropical so can survive at the same temp as the turtle the only problem is if they filter with your turtle isnt mature which then the toxins from the turtles waste wil kill the fish if you were wanting to keep them alive to breed.

plus you can sell the pretty ones to the pet shop

And if you want to keep guppies with turtles put a lot of plants around (wide plants) so that the guppies can hide in them and the turtles wont eat them all in like a day. but that is a threat to the turtle as he might get stuck in the plant.

When i buy them from the shop will the people be able to identify female/male or is it just luck..don't know much about fish

They will be able to tell, its really easy - the males have a visible penis, looks like a tiny transparent toothpick. Also the males are prettier, bigger tailfin.

You guppies will store enough sperm for up to 3 or 4 clutches.

I would go get some gambusia from the local creak, give them about a week in clean water and you'll have no problems.

If you have things like elodea or valesneria in the tank you'll have enough breeding in with the turtles not to worry about a second tank.

Go out and collect some Gambusia (sure thats what many people here are talking about)
They are nuisance species that populate in just about any & every fresh waterway. A better option than feeding off an accepted tropical aquarium species JMO.

Know any rivers that have them in Sydney? Preferably near the Bankstown area.
Or are they in most rivers?
