We are heading up to Cairns in August for about 4 weeks.
Can anyone suggest any good places to stay in and around Cairns for a family?
I've looked on the net but i always find that it's good to have some where recommended.
Cheers
Koubee:p

Pacific International is nice. Its just over the road from the casino and there's plenty of eateries within walking distance. The deal clencher for me was that as dusk falls you have all the flying foxes coming into the city at night. If you have a room on about the 9th floor they fly past at about face level in wave after wave. I thought it was pretty cool but maybe that's just me

Cairns Coconut Resort is definately the place if you have kids.
Flying foxes are pretty much everywhere up here, we get them flying through our balcony some nights.

thanks guys....
Really looking forward to getting up there, might even do a spot of house hunting...lol

Cairns is wonderful. I miss it so much - hping to move back ASAP. I have stayed at the Casino & was real nice but really expensive! Stay away from the Rainbow Inn

We always stay at the Lakes resort, is a 5min drive out of the city centre, has 4 pools, kids club, BBQ's, tennis courts, bar and restaurants, lovely apartments ( bit cheaper being out a little) and there is a lovely little walk through forest to botanic gardens right next door(where we had a tree snake slither right in front of us) Have a great trip.

Why not look at getting a holiday house, 4 weeks is a long time(and a lot of money)at a hotel. We are getting married up ther on the 2nd august and that what we have done, my fav place is harbour lights appartments though. There is so much to choose from up here.

Thanks guys,
I'll check out that one Sarah M. Sounds good.
I don't mind staying a little out of Cairns. We are spending 4 weeks there and seeing if we like it and if we do there is a very strong chance we will move up there. Hate Melbourne weather...grrr

Would love to catch up with a few fellow APS people while i'm up there.:)

Don't move to cairns, it's horrible up here... There's pollution, 95% humidity every day... oh they say the temperature is just 35'C - well, let's put it this way, when you've experienced how horrid it really is you'll thank god that 45'C in Melbs doesn't feel like that... Oh then there's the cyclones... Oh terrible cyclones...

The people here are horrible too... Awful people... No.. don't move to Cairns... there's just too many people here as it is :p

Actually... part of the above is true... But Cairns is truly the most beautiful city I have ever lived in.

Though... It is changing quite rapidly and it's becoming less beautiful and more commercial as the months go on - very upsetting. Though with recent news that Qantas will no longer fly to Cairns from Japan is actually good for us - house prices are steadying, though rent is still the highest it has been for a long time...

I can agree with Sarah, the lakes is beautiful.. but if I had a choice and had family, I'd take the Coconut Resort any day as scorps and mags said!

Ahhh you can't put me off that easy Slim6y...:)

It's a toss up between Coconut Resort, Kuranda Rainforest Park and Crystal Cascades. Theyre all around the same price..lol

I work very close to the crystal cascades - brrrrrr, cold as this time of the year, but you melbournites could handle it I guess :p

Will you have a car? If you have a car stay somewhere unique then... And do lots of drive outs. There's some awesome spots around. And I'm sure we can arrange a small dinner out or something to meet up... I'm keen - sushi anyone???

Will you have email and access to APS when up here to arrange?

Just stay with slimey ;), hes got a half decent house :p and doesn't smell that bad :D

got no where to recommend-i stayed at JJ's backpackers & when i go back later this year i will be staying at dads (free accom yay)
Have fun while you are up there
